If a Rip Van Winkle had gone to sleep a generation ago he might be a bit surprised to return and find mutiple flights from DUB to all parts of Poland and several flights a day to the UAE. But he might have expected a year round service to Canada.

Perhaps EI should start a Toronto service and feed traffic on to the UAE operators, as the Canadians are not very welcoming to UAE direct flights?

I always wondered why they didnt.Seems like the right thing to do seeing as so many are heading there for work.

I think Canada is a logical extension to the EI route network. Their CEO has pretty much ruled out any Eastward developments and has stated that West Coast will happen when conditions improve.

-You need 12 months lead in to start ops to Canada.
-EI do not have the spare fleet capacity at the moment. (Maybe Summer 2013?)
-EI may not be able to compete on price with Air Transat. (Unlikely in my view)

I see EI as being able to offer a good product on the Ireland-Canada market compared to the current seasonal Air Transat/Air Canada product. However Air Transat currently serves Ireland daily (SNN and DUB several times each) EI would not start at this frequency, expect to start with 3x weekly if/when it does happen.

IIRC EI did fly to Montreal years ago , never understood why they didn't do Toronto instead.

I've heard from a few that the Air Transat service isn't great? Anyone fly with them before?

Because there is very little to do in Toronto and most people I know come back disappointed. Where as there is lots to do in Montreal (great destination for the summer and fantastic skiing areas nearby for the winter). Having said that most people these days want to go to Vancouver.

I would say not.I recall an article in Irish air Letter(me thinks it was this publication)many moons ago remarking in a historical context as to why Montreal as opposed to Toronto was served by EI and it was due to some sort of Canadian Government stipulation even allowing for the fact that back then in the 1970's Toronto was the choice of Irish ex pats.
The service for the record routed Dublin-Shannon-Montreal-Chicago-Shannon-Dublin.

Its actually grand, have flown with them many times. I my last trip was less than €350 return to toronto, including all taxes etc... Flight got into TO about an hour early too.

But yea i'm quite suprised EI don't do a flight to Toronto, given the amount of irish people that are based around there, not even the amount that have gone there in the last few years.

Montreal would be great if it wasn't for the people there. The French speakers are a pain in the ass if you are English speaking IMO.
Lots to do in Toronto .

It was back when Canada had a similar policy to the Shannon stopover that required all aircraft to stop over in Shannon if flying to Dublin or passing through Ireland on their way to Europe. In Aer Lingus' case they had to make a stopover in Canada for the Shannon-Chicago flight, so were required to use Montréal. Eventually when Aer Lingus upgraded their fleet, they didn't need to make the stopover, and hence the route to Montréal ended.

Even up until 2007 when Ireland and Canada agreed a new 'Open Skies' deal, Aer Lingus could still only fly to Montréal, while Canadian carriers could fly to Shannon or Dublin via Shannon. So services between the 2 countries have been restricted for a long time, so it'll take a while I'd say before a year-round route is established, but the new wave of emigrants going to Canada will probably speed it up.
