    Hey guys,

I've recently inherited an Irish army officer's green wool overcoat, it's very heavy and has brass buttons and other insignia. I think it's from the 1960's but can't be sure.

I don't really have any need for it and I was hoping to sell it on, do you know anywhere more specialised than the likes of ebay that deals in this kind of thing? Also could anyone be able to give me a rough valuation for it? It's in perfect condition and has seen use in service, it's not surplus stock.

Selling or inducing someone to sell property of the Minister is an offence in this jurisdiction, unfortunately. It's a great pity that you're not selling this in the UK, because the reach of the Guards doesn't extend there for something as trivial as this.

Oh I had no idea that it remained property of the state, like a passport yeah? Consider my intent to sell withdrawn so! :o

As it's an Officer's coat. Surely it is the property of the Officer and not the state. Were, are not Officers expected to buy their own uniforms? With an allowance of course.

In any case as it's an obsolete item of uniform, it's hardly likely to be seized and returned to stores. Not that it was ever in stores in the first place given that it would have been made for an individual.

I have a Mk2 helmet, complete with Eastern Command flash. Under the law it's still military property. But they can prise it from my cold dead hands or head in this case.

Sell it. I think the State will resist the urge to track you down for a greatcoat. They're very good coats, too. Us enlisted slime only had skinny polyester coats to wear and they were ****e!

That's a very good point... however, try arguing it to a Guard. Also, you'll need to strip it of all insignia and rank markings associated with the DF before sale. Unless, of course, you're selling it in the UK, like to one of the second-hand costume shops in Belfast who stock DF uniforms.

I think it's unlikely to cause problems, but if it did, would it be worth it?

Throw it up on ebay with whatever reserve you think it's worth and see what happens.

End of the day a few quid in your pocket for an item you don't want or need and someone else gets an item they want nobody's hurt

These are still worn on occasion.

When I say I inherited it it was left in a house I moved into and I've contacted the family who used to live there and they don't want it.

Could anyone give me a rough indication of how much it's worth? I'll try and get a pic up over the next few days.

If anyone is genuinely interested do PM me
