Getting puppy neutered

    Hi everyone,
Just have a few questions regarding getting my puppy neutered. I want to get him sorted soon enough if possible but I was wondering what age is best to get it done at. He's almost 4 months old now so I'm not sure if this is the right age or whether he's too young or not.
Also what is the recovery period like? Will he be very sore? I suppose he'll have to wear one of those cone things for a few days yeah?
Will he need any extra special treatment or care after it's done? And is it a quick procedure or will he have to stay overnight in the vets?

Sorry for all the questions but I have no experience of this and really haven't got a clue what it entails!
    Thanks.

First off, what breed of dog is he? Generally, its best to wait until they are around 8 months old, a bit longer if its a giant breed. My boy recovered pretty quickly and didn't wear a cone at all, but was supervised to make sure he didn't go at his stitches. He was up and about for a walk after about four days. It isn't an overnight job, usually drop him in in the morning and he should be okay to go home by that evening.
Good on you for wanting to get him done, its something that a lot of people couldn't be bothered to do despite our overwhelming dog population.

I got mine neutered at 6 months, and very glad that I did. He's calmed down a bit, and stopped humping everything - he was getting very aggravated by that. He didn't wear a cone, and only had one stitch which didn't cause him much distress other than the first few times peeing.

Sorry I should've said he's a Bichon Frise. I'd just like to get him done as early as possible as he's starting to socialise with my friends dogs now and I wouldn't want any unwanted accidents! Plus he tends to hump strangers!

Most vet's won't neuter until at least 6 months as sometimes anaesthetic can be dangerous to very young pups. The longer you wait the better imo. I assume your friend has an intact bitch?

For a small breed, like a Bichon, 6 months is a perfect age to get them neutered.

For males, they tend to come home feeling a bit groggy and sorry for themselves but the next day he will be back to himself (and maybe still feeling a little sorry for himself). He should be in and out of the vets in one day (you drop him in early in the morning and collect him in the evening). If he is done late in the day, he might need to stay overnight but this isn't the norm. He will have stitches in and, depending on whether they are dissoluble or not, you will need to get them taken out 10 days to 2 weeks after the operation. He may need a buster collar (looks like a bit lampshade) if he is liking at his stitches. You will need to have a peep at the wound everyday to make sure it isn't infected or dodgy looking (it is generally very obvious when there is something wrong - very red and angry looking, maybe with puss, and painful). He will be given a long lasting painkiller in the vets so may not need to go home with any or he could be sent home with a day or two of painkilling tablets.

Most buys get on very well after being neutered, the vet will advise you on any after care and, given a day or two, he won't know the difference!

Thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated.

Yeah he was playing with my friends bitch and I had to keep an eye on him the whole time.
He's very friendly with new people and plays with them for a while but then after about 15-20 mins of playing, he tries to hump them. So I was afraid we'd have an accident if we left them alone for a while.

I wouldn't leave them alone either way for a while yet, let him build up his social skills a bit more first, just in case he oversteps the mark and another dog decides to 'put him in his place'.

Yeah he can get a bit hyper-active around other dogs. I know he just wants to play but he tends to annoy other dogs with his constant bouncing around and "look at me, look at me" attitude!
We had him over in a friends house yesterday and he was playing with a Pyrenean mountain dog and the other dog was seriously uninterested! The pictures I have of the size difference is hilarious but the pyrenean would tear him to pieces if he stepped out of line. I was hoping that getting him neutered would also calm him down a little bit when it comes to things like this but I suppose he's just being a puppy! :D
