I bought a Macbook Pro in the states last week. I asked them could I transfer over my old files and applications and what was a good way. They said I could use the firewire port with migration assistant and it was very straight forward. I said I had a white Macbook 13inch from 2009 and would it have the port and they said it definitely should so I bought a firewire cable in the store too. Got home to Ireland to find out that the early 2009 MacBooks had firewire but the late 2009 ones which I have do not. I've wasted $30 on a firewire cable it seems. Can't understand why they got rid of the firewire in a newer model.

Anyway my question now is, what is the best way I should go about this now? The most straight forward and simple way if possible as I wouldn't be too technically minded. I was looking forward to getting home and just having a straight forward swap which I should have guessed wouldn't happen.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jof.

One option if you use Time machine is to back up from that drive. Tried iMac to iMac a couple of weeks ago and no luck (via FireWire). Went to the time aching option and it worked great.

Cheers, I have a portable hard drive with my mac backed up to it. Will it copy over all my iTunes too as that is the main thing I want to make sure goes over as I have about 6,000 songs in it and also my iPhoto library?

If you backed up via Time Machine and do the migration via Time Machine then everything will be as is on the new MBP. It will take a while but it will do it as seamless as possible.

Just finished up doing it there. There was a few niggly things like permissions to view certain files etc…. but I sorted that. Had a problem Authorizing the comp to play my iTunes music but again after playing around a little bit that was all sorted.

    Cheers for the help lads.

Glad it worked. The MBP is a fine machine. Enjoy it.

Sounds painful though. Did it ache a lot?
Is this another case of "check as you type" gone crazy? :D
