Turbo Training

    Folks,

    Just started proper turbo trianing at home and get bored after a half an hour, Just wondering would anyone have any useful sessions I could follow. Also how long do you folks usually spend Turbo training and would you have any advice as to how to defeat the boredom.;)

    I put it in front of the TV for easy sessions and do mock 1 hour TT's for harder training and to measure my fitness. 1 hour on the turbo is my psychological limit though.

    Easy sessions watch some downloaded TV Episodes, harder sessions I watch one of the Sufferfest videos. Just over an hour is all I can do, and I find it much harder than on the road.

    the wheelworx website has specific sessions for turbos from beginers to aerobic work to race prep, maybe try some of these for a bit of structure, the boredom needs a tele or music to defeat it.

    I don't have a turbo (yet) but I use the sufferfest videos on the gym bike, highly recommend them if you want to crease yourself!

    No more than an hour for an interval session and always some tv / music.

    Easy 1hrs i just play some online poker, read a book/magazine and listen to music. For the 3 and 4 hour sessions i watch some boxing/ufc and some movies/TV series'

    3-4 hrs on the turbo. That's hardcore! A regular thing or only when road conditions are bad?

    Weather dependent but ive no issue with it and do it regularly enough. once ive something decent to watch i dont mind, that and a fan! And a big towel!

    Also, get a fan to provide a bit of a headwind, reduces the sweat. A bit.

    Structure your turbo sessions properly and they'll fly, you should be watching every second ! There's tons out there on the web, but be brutal and disciplined. You can do an excellent workout in an hour which will keep you fully concentrated and have you almost throwing up. Follow that with a cool down and some proper stretching and you'll achieve more than you will in 4 hours p1ssing about on a group spin talking sh1te.

    Its great for structuring your session, Buzzers sound to indicate start and end of intervals.

    I've been doing an hour most week nights for the last couple of weeks on a VR turbo, as per this thread. The time goes by pretty quickly and the work rate is reasonably high for me, ~200W per hour. I'm still waiting for the novelty to wear off. If I can keep it up until there's a stretch in the evenings I'll be delighted.

    You will get more out of your turbo sessions if done properly than out on the road especially if you need to control the session with intervals, sweet spot, FTP work etc. I done a handful of 5hr stints last year on it as i was cycling on the GPS course route for the IMUK on the VR trainer, its mentally draining at times but once you have a good selection of tv, music and take a dose of HTFU you get through it alright:)

    I agree re the fan you need to keep yourself as cool as possible.
