We went to Koh Phangan a couple of years ago, absolutely loved it. We flew from Bangkok to Koh Samui and then caught the ferry across. Koh Samui was much more developed, which is why I chose Koh Phangan.

If you don't want to pay for the flights would you consider the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then catch the ferry to Koh Phangan, you can book cabins on the train as far as I can remember.

Soo jealous, would be back there in a heartbeat!

For me Koh Phangan wouldn't be described as a 'tropical paradise'. I'd recommend Koh Phi Phi, seems to tick all the boxes for what you want.
