Graduated ND Filters

Just wondering does anyone use one of these all the time or are there certain times where you shouldn't use one? I'm thinking of getting one but just want to see if they are actually worth it or what uses people get out of them!.

I was told that they are very good for video so thats one of the reasons I want one too!!

I use them generally for outdoor shots in the summer to darken the sky. That and a polariser are always in my bag.

Ah ok, so you use them with a polariser? wasn't sure if you use the 2 at once, have no experience with one.

I think what you mean is a Variable Neutral Density filter, not graduated.

What are you trying to achieve? Is it very long exposures e.g. a couple of mins? The filters you've listed will give 9-12 and 9 stops which is quite a lot!

I occasionally use them both together.

I use the cheaper Cokin P series (or the Kood equivalent). These are relatively cheap and can be used on a variety of lenses by simply having a suitable adaptor ring for the filter carrier (which can take up to 3 filters at a time).

The 1st is variable and the 2nd is fixed.

Well 1 for the nice soft images with water, (have seen some vid's online) and the other reason is for video, I think you can vary the shutter speed and aperture a lot more, don't fully understand it a huge amount but apparently meant to be good for video.

I think your right when you say variable! getting my words mixed up as had to write quickly earlier before the boss came back in!!

Can somebody please throw up some of their images using one so I can get an idea of what they can achieve, is that possible?

You can do stuff like this
