Ye need to clean up your act lads.

You'll give the rest of us a bad name.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0109/litter.html

Cork's Knocknaheeny and Dublin's north inner city have been branded litter blackspots in the latest survey by the Irish Business Against Litter group.

However, IBAL says that despite pressure on resources and public spending in general, Ireland's towns are not allowing cleanliness levels to slip.
The top five ranked towns are Cavan, Dún Laoghaire, Killarney, Swords and Trim. One of those five will be named Ireland's cleanest town later today.
When IBAL started carrying out its surveys ten years ago, only two Irish towns were deemed clean to European standards. Today, 38 towns are given that rating.
Nine towns are described as moderately littered, while Portlaoise, Letterkenny, Dublin City and Tipperary Town are described as littered.
The worst rating of litter blackspot was given to Knocknaheeny and North Inner City Dublin.
IBAL said it had strongly criticised both areas earlier last year and said it was a major letdown that litter levels have actually increased since then.
Sweet papers, chewing gum and fast food wrappers are the most common form of litter.

Its no wonder The Queen of England hasn't been back to see us since.
    Dirty feckers !

I just wrote an email yesterday, to Dublin City Council, about the huge amount of rubbish piling up in my street (live in North Inner City).

Interesting article- I thank you kindly :).

Just goes to show the northside of anywhere is the bad part.

The north inner city is really falling apart.... and I am ashamed to say that as a northsider! I don't even feel properly safe at my bus stop anymore, which is around one of the areas that's always trashed with litter :(

To be fair, Knocknaheeny is a kip alright.

Dun Laoghaire will win so we still get the +1 here in Dublin. Dublin is so great it can still be shit dirty and win a tidy towns competition.

    Boom

The thread title is a tad misleading, one parish/area in Cork and the entire county needs to clean up their act

Its all local to Cork. Thats the (somewhat unfortunate) perception for those of us who have never heard of Knocknaheeny.
One bad apple rots the whole barrel.

In fairness to the RTE report they are quite clear about it "Knocknaheeny in Cork........", to most folk that's quite clearly an area. If anyone takes from the report that the entire county is a litter blackspot they are nothing short of an idiot.

Yeah? Well then, God speed the day when I get to move over the Shannon to Southill.

    Irish Businesses Against Litter.

Hmmm, never hear them complaining about businesses littering the countryside with their illegal adds outside every town.

It's what a number of non Corkonians think Corkonians call Patrick Street, Cork's main thoroughfare.

Well the responsibility lies surely first and foremost with the person who litters. That said, when I lived in Ringsend and was walking through the East Wall/North Strand areas one day (literally just across the river from Ringsend) I really noticed all the litter and dog-sh1t which was far worse than just across the river - and it seemed it was more abandoned by the council all right.

I lived in East Wall for seven years and have never seen anywhere with more dog crap than there.

yes of course it does, but everyone everywhere litters. if O Connell St wasn't constantly kept clean every day that'd be a state too.

Knocka doesn't count for anything. Ever.

The place has always been a kip.

People in all areas litter, no doubt, but I guess there is more of a sh1t given about some places than others, by those living there. Knocknaheeny is a part of Cork with a LOT of problems - although it has calmed down a bit in the last 10 years or so.
As I said though, that sight I saw in East Wall/North Strand seemed council neglected.

yeah, and like I was saying in the 11 months I've been living here, not once has anybody cleaned the street I'm living on. though considering that, it's actually not in a bad state (most of it).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 211 ✭✭30Min

Well I decided yesterday that I would write an email, take some photos of the street I live on and fire them off to the council and I won't be letting the matter rest until action is taken. As many people as possible should do the same if they are concerned about their areas. Its a start anyway :D

Actually, a lot of the Cork papers have just stopped reporting what happens up there.

There's still the nightly car thefts and fights.

O'Connell St might be swept and kept clean at street level.

But from there up its a mess, with tacky shopfronts, plastic signage, and vandalism sanctioned by the council and An Bord Pleanna in the guise of good architecture and street furniture.

    The place is a mess.

They might stop stuffing my letterbox with their stupid flyers.
And putting leaflets on windscreens when people are in mass or at a GAA match
    ,
And stop those distracting signs that pop up by roads as you enter many towns. Councils are trying to get rid of them

Knocking Knock is like kicking a fella when he's down

It's part of Cork and part of Corks problem.
