Is there a certain time period you have to be unemployed since/out of education since to qualify for the dole?
Also, I have been receiving the grant for college education...will this effect me applying for it?

As far as i know it's 3 month from when you left school/college.

You can apply straight away but you need a letter from the admin department stating you've finished full time education

So if you're in college and going from second year to third year for example then no dole for you

Or for another example, if you've finished your ordinary degree and have a letter for this, you can go on the dole and return for an honours degree in September if that's your plan

They were called certs, diplomas and degrees back in my day

You can apply for a Jobseekers payment as soon as you finish college, you do NOT have to wait three months (this time-limit only applies to those finishing second level education).

You will need a letter from your college to say that your course is finished. There is an issue about starting future courses, eg. postgrad as this may be an indication that you are not genuinely seeking full-time work, and may be putting unreasonable restrictions on the work that you are looking for, eg. only looking for temporary contracts. But if you can persuade them that you are looking for full-time work and are not restricting your job seeking efforts (and meet all the other criteria), then there is nothing to stop you claiming a Jobseekers payment.

I am in the first year of my two year diploma course now, so I guess that means no dole! Thanks for the answers guys!

If you have a jobseekers benefit entitlement you can claim that during summer holidays once you are looking for work etc. But to be able to claim jobseekers allowance you have to be 23 years of age on 1st January prior to commencing your course and be looking for work etc.
