No oil change in 4 years

    Hi,

My brother has an old Toyota Corolla '99. He hasn't had it serviced since early 2008 or had oil changed. He just checks the oil every few months and tops it up as needed.

Will that mess up his engine, and aside from oil is there anything else he should have gotten changed over a 4 year time period.

    Thanks

Yeah, it'll mess it up. he's just putting oil in on top of sludge.

Those Corollas will stand up to abuse, but for the sake of €20 for cheap oil and filter.....

    Madness,

Totally agree with colm_mcm, I have an old Avensis that burns a lot of oil and I was topping it up as needed and not changing the oil. Eventually the car stalled on the side of the road and the mechanic told me I was lucky to save it, completely full of sludge/gunk! Defo get an oil filter and 5 litres of oil for less than €25. Tell him to change it!

Saw the inside of a Ford Escort engine that was pulled out of car once, it had done 27,000 miles and the oil had turned to tar. The poor old woman that owned it just didnt know she had to get the oil changed.

Agree, the oil will turn a funny colour. Use a good Oil Treatment & give the car a full service in order to save it.

That should be a criminal offence!

Its crazy and scary how some people have absolutely no mechanical sympathy/knowledge

Ill pass it on to him. The last car he just drove for a few hundred miles with the actual oil warning light on. The engine had to be replaced.

Best thing he can do is change the filter and put a fill of cheap oil in then drive it for a few hundred miles to clear out the muck caked inside the engine then change the oil and filter again but use a good quality oil to keep the engine running a bit better.

So he destroyed his last engine for what was an oil or oil pressure problem and then he goes about destroying the next car too. Is he paying for these cars himself?

There are people out there who think that a car is like a solar-powered calculator, you just keep using it until it dies.

At this stage he should go for it. Play roulette & see how it goes. If it goes a 99 corola is no great loss to the world.

I rememebr checking my GF s car and not even gettig a reading on the dip stick. I asked here how long since she topped up & she just laughed. I asked here when she had got it service last & she said never ! she though it was probably serviced when she got it around 3 yrs previous. Was fine anyways in the end, she sold it to some one who assumed there were getting a minty 5yr old focus with only 2 lady owners.......

I'd hate to smell the emissions coming out of that car

Reminds me of an old joke.

"I've never had to change the oil in my car. I just check the level, then put a litre in it every week to top up and away it goes,"
