Bank notes

Northern Irish bank-notes seem to have the name of the bank written on them as if they've been printed by the bank rather than printed by the government. Do the banks in the UK print their own notes? If so, why doesn't the government print them, or the government mint or whatever?

Yes i am from Northern Ireland. Each region has their own bank notes except wales which uses bank of england notes. The notes can be excepted in any region of the uk, the most common bank note used in northern ireland is either the northern bank one or the bank of england one, the bank of england note is probably more common than some of our own bank notes due to the number of those in circulation, i'm not sure but i think that there are probably around equal amount of northern irish notes and english notes as they are pretty common. You can get some bank of scotland notes but they are very rare as they are not normally circulated that often and if you say them you'd think they were false because they are like plastic. Anyway, the only legal ones are the bank of england ones the others aren't. Anyway, thats all.

But speaking from experience Bank of Ireland/Ulster Bank/Northern Bank notes are very rarely (if ever) accepted in England.

Bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank and Northern Bank notes are much more common than Bank of England notes in Northern Ireland.

Not quite. In NI and Scotland, no banknotes are legal tender. Neither local ones nor Bank of England.

In England and Wales, Bank of England notes are legal tender.

But all the above banknotes are legal currency.

Legal tender just means that you must accept them if someone is repaying you a debt. It does not mean you have to accept them if someone wants to buy something from you.

As for what's common, £5 BoE notes are very common in NI, because AFAIK the only local bank which produces fivers is Bank of Ireland. I haven't seen one from the other four banks in years (the Northern Bank plastic fiver isn't that common any more).

I know you've been banned from this forum now but I should clarify something here. I live in the UK as well so I suppose the currency we use here does matter to me.
