Round the world cycle race

Not sure if any of you have heard that, following on the interest of the various round the world cycle records which have been set over the past few years, there is an organised cycle race around the world this year, starting in London on the 18th February. O particular interest is the fact that there is an Irish entrant (Simon Hutchinson). Here’s his website http://www.simonsepiccycle.com/.
I see that in conjunction with his race around the world he’s raising money for Brainwave – The Irish Epilepsy Association. His website says he’s organising a fundraising event for on 21st January at Mondello Park race track where he’s hoping that cyclists will collectively ride 18,000 miles over the course of the day - the distance he will ride during the World Cycle Race. It would be good if cyclists around the country could support him in his endeavours. I’ve signed up for the 21st anyway.
I have to confess to being a bit of a world circumnavigation record fanatic :D and I know I’ll never hold it so the next best thing is for another Irish man to hold it.

Is it a UCI regulated race?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭dc2

Not UCI regulated that I am aware of. Basically it follows the Guinness World Records requirements which has various rules for a round the world record to be recognised. Here are some of the rules:
•Complete a provable minimum of 18,000 miles in the same direction at all times
•Use a GPS tracker linked to the race website.
•Visit antipodal points (opposite sides of the world e.g. New Zealand and Spain).
•Stay on the same bike (parts may be replaced).
    • Participants are free to devise their own routes around the world.

Best of luck to simon on his world wide adventure.
Very envious of him, will have to settle for following his escapades online.

Thanks for the link. I've been contemplating a charity event for some time now and this was just the kick in the butt that I needed.

Signed up. Hope to see some more boardsies there on the day. I wish I had a boards.ie cycle jersey now. :o

I was interested in this until I saw the "suggested" sponsorship.

You don't have to pay the €100 to register, in fact, you don't have to pay anything to register. The registration site assists you to create your own sponsorship page that you can link to your facebook profile allowing your friends and family to donate small amounts direct to brainwave which then shows up on your tally.

There is also a contact who can send you sponsorship cards if you request them. I've done both.

If you can get 8 friends to donate €10 each and you are prepared to pay €20 from your own pocket then that's €100

Also, I don't think that if you don't make your target that you will be prevented from participating.

Also, I don't think that if you don't make your target that you will be prevented from participating.

That's not the impression given on the website.

It would be much better if the suggested donation was lower. It would probably guarantee higher participation. I live fairly local to Mondello but no way am I going now.

Also if I was to go around asking my friends for sponsorship every time I wanted to do a charity cycle, I wouldn't have many friends left. Hence I (and many others I know) now self-sponsor. And I'm not paying €100 for this.

Hi dub1973 - I'm glad we're both on the same page now!!

And I'm not paying €100 for this.

I dont think the €100 should be considered as a fee to pay for doing the challange -it is a contribution to the charity. A different thing I would have thought.

I'm taking part in the sponsored ride on the 21st, only 9 days away, and I'm trying to set myself an attainable goal. I'm thinking 30 laps around Mondello at 3.5 km per lap (105km) in the allotted 6 hours. I will also be cycling 12.5 km from home (Newbridge) to the track and and back after. That's a total of 130 km.

    Here's my question

there is also the The Artemis World Cycle in which Mark Beaumount participated in, he has been mentioned a couple times on this in regards to his feat and book

Got this email from a friend this evening.

    Hi all,
I mentioned Simon Hutchinson’s round the world cycle attempt last week but just in case it was not clear from my message, as part of his attempt he is organising a Round the World in a Day challenge at Mondello Park race track next Saturday. He is raising funds for Brainwave – the Irish Epilepsy Association. The idea is that you cycle round the track from 10.00 onwards (registration from 9.00) and clock up as many laps as possible over a 6 hrs period. There is no entry fee but participants are asked to donate as much as possible on the day (or on line) to Brainwave. More details below and at http://www.simonsepiccycle.com/events/. I met Simon over Christmas and given the nature of his task offered to give him a help out. It would be great if you could make it on the day to clock up some mile for this worthy cause and hopefully have a bit of fun.
    Regards,
    Xxxx

On the 18th February, Simon Hutchinson from Bailieborough, Co Cavan will depart on an 18,000 miles round the word race. As well as competing against other racers he will by break the Guinness world record for the fastest Circumnavigation of the Globe by Bicycle.
Simon is the only Irish competitor in the World Cycle Racing Grand Tour event and is using the event to raise funds for Brainwave – the Irish Epilepsy Association. As part of the fundraising effort, a massive cycling challenge known as the Mondello Cycling Challenge is being held at Mondello Park race track on January 21st.

What is the Mondello Cycle Challenge?
This unique challenge aims to get at least 250 cyclists to pedal around the 2.17 mile or 3.5 km track over a 6 hour period and collectively clock up 18,000 miles or 28,968.192 km (to be exact).
This is the distance Simon will cycle during The World Cycle Race. The aim of the challenge is to cover the full round the world distance in just one day. Covering that distance in one place by so many riders has never been attempted in Ireland before. This will be a first so you should be there!
Please note this is not a race. Cyclists of all levels are invited to take part and there will be 2 lanes on the track to facilitate faster and more leisurely riders.

How many laps will you need to cover?
If you cycle at 15mph for 6 hours you will cover 90 miles. If 250 people did this that would be 22,500 miles – well above the target 18,000. Allowing for a variation in speeds and food/rest breaks, if 250 cyclists managed to do an average of 72 miles each or 34 laps, the total would be 18,445 miles, nicely above the target mileage. However, apart from asking everyone to ride safely, we make no demands on how fast or slow anyone wishes to go.

    How do I sign up?
You can find out more and sign up at Simon's Epic Cycle website at:
    http://www.simonsepiccycle.com/events/
Entries will also be accepted on the day of the event.
Each cyclist is asked to raise or donate as much as possible to take part in this event. All funds raised go to Brainwave. Sponsorship cards are available from Brainwave by emailing fundraising@epilepsy.ie with your name, address, a contact number and the number of cards needed.

Hey rich.d, just signed up for this myself. Opted for the fast lane  but will probably drop into the slow lane when the legs are gone. Will be wearing a Boards jersey so hoping to see a few more there too.

Simon was out with us last Sunday morning on our spin (VTCC( and he did say that the € 100 fee for the cycle on Saturday is just a target and you can donate as much as you are able to and still be welcome to take part.
He came across as a really sound guy, he estimates that it will cost in the region of € 20,000 to participate and take about 5 months to complete.

+1 on above. He's taking on some challenge. I've organised with work to sponsor me @€;1/km. Here's hoping I raise more than a tenner:D

    Hi Guys,

I see the World Cycle Racing website is up http://worldcycleracing.com/. They have to populate some of the pages yet but it is great to see Simon's flag up there on the map. Looking forward to following his progress and all the other racers.

He's going to give €20,000 out of his own pocket and go six months without any income for a charity? That's impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭mikerd4

So is this a confirmed give as much as you can donation or just pure word of mouth? I only live 4k from mondello and would love to take part and give a few quid to charity but I cannot give 100e simple as!

I can confirm that the €100 requirement has been changed and it is now up to everyone to donate as much as they can. Of course anyone who wants to give €100 (or more) is also welcome to do so.
There will be buckets to collect all donations on the day. Of course this does not imply that throwing 20c in a bucket will be fine - so please try to contribute as much as you can.

I'd imagine corporate sponsorship will play a major part, logo's on gear etc.

The weather for the Mondello Challenge is not looking great on the wind front. According to the wind forecast for Mountrath (the closest station to Mondello) there will be fresh to strong westerly winds.

The forecast for specific times tomorrow are given in the table below.

    Time Wind Speed
    09:00 31 km/h
    12:00 35 km/h
    15:00 30 km/h
    18:00 24 km/h

Because Mountrath is 50 km West of Mondello I would assume that we'd need to add about an hour to the times in the table to get a more accurate picture for Mondello. This is assuming that the weather systems move at about the same speed as the wind.

Hopefully Mondello is not too exposed to wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭cdaly_

Weather systems do not move at wind speed. They typically move much slower. However, wind speeds are generally similar over a fairly large area so the quoted (moderate to fresh) speeds for Mountrath would be typical at Mondello.

It's also important to note that the wind speeds quoted are at a height of 10m and will be significantly lower at cyclist height of about 2m. Something like 65-70%.
    shear.gif
This image shows the change in wind speed with height. Only the lowest part of the graph is significant here but you can see how drastic the change with height is so close to the ground.

Heh Darah, no worries the entry fee has since been changed to a donation that the participant deems appropriate for taking part in this unique event! So its up to yourself €20, €30 etc.. any amount helps, remember its all for charity and we are looking to get as many cyclists involved.

Hope you change your mind Daragh and we see you there!:D

    Heh Richard

Great to see a breakdown of the weather, hopefully it wont be as bad but I wouldnt be too worried in any case about being exposed, the more people we have the better we can recycle the cover and push out those km's. I'll be there with the bike fully loaded painners and all so stick behind me and Ill be sure to block the wind for you and anyone else!

So are you aiming for your 206 km average tomorrow Simon? ;)

I'll be glad to do 105, (30 laps) though I'll try and push out the extra 4 to do the requisite 126.

Around 30 bikes and riders started in pole position this morning. Interesting start watching the countdown clock, and the start lights changing from red to green. Managed to stay with the front bunch (which consisted of mainly Usher CC guys) for the first 25km or so. Soon realized my abilities were in a much lower league, and so dropped down to a more manageable pace for the next 100. Took 2 breaks, first at 2hrs (59km) and 2nd at 4hrs (104km). Wind was horrible and got stronger through the day. Did 132km (37 laps) in just over 5hrs.

    http://app.strava.com/rides/3504618

Well organised event, fair play to Simon. Pity he didn't get the numbers he was hoping for. but that's January for ya.

Nice to meet Boardsies rich.d.berry, ventoux and of course S.Hutch.

I would imagine the "suggested" contribution put a lot of people off. I was with 4 guys on Friday night who would have loved to have taken part but finding 100€ to go cycling just isnt possible at the moment.

It was good to meet you too jimm. I was shattered today, the wind really took it out of me. Slept late, legs not feeling too bad now but my left knee is playing up. Stairs are posing a bit more of a challenge now.

I managed to make my target of 30 laps and 106 km, but only just. I had only 39 seconds left on the countdown clock when I crossed the line on my last lap.

I found Simon to be a real gentleman and I'm sure he will be a fine ambassador for Ireland. All the people from Brainwave seem a sound bunch too. Thanks guys for organising a good day out, it's just a pity that there were so few of us participating.

The Usher boys put in a brilliant performance. Any illusions I might have held about my cycling ability are truly shattered now. I managed to stay with the group for a couple of laps and when I was dropped off the end (and found myself going solo most of the time) I was lapped 8 times by them at the end of the day.

I managed to limp home afterwards, despite the headwind, and managed to record a personal best distance of 131 km.
