Need help in choosing a car

Hi there,

I'm currently looking at changing my car. I have a 2001 Audi A3 1.9tdi and would like to upgrade to something a little more modern. My criteria is:
• Hatchback
• Year: 2006 - 2008
• Fuel type: Diesel
• TDI
• Max Mileage: 80k
• Budget: Around €8k
• Motor tax currently is €585. I would like to lower this considerably.

So I'm looking for some suggestions maybe. I bought my last car in London and would have no problem in doing the same again. I spotted the following car but the mileage seems unusually low (http://bit.ly/yZtyNw). Also, the annual motor tax is something I'm not that familiar with. I know my brother in law is paying less than €200 p.a. with his Renault Fluence. Is it possible for me to get my annual motor tax down to this level for the kind of car I'm looking for. Am I better to buy it through a garage rather than privately?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your not going to get a low tax band car with sub 80k miles for €8k..

EDIT: Something like this ? http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Focus/ZETEC-CO/713243685048860/advert?channel=CARS

Youll easily get 08 Focus, C4, Astra, and old model Meganes. That's about it in that class though.

What year Golf would I need to buy to get into the lower tax class?

You'll find it hard to find a decent spec'd 2008 Golf with low tax
Some 2007 1.6 Golf's go for €10k

Kinda makes a mockery of the whole reasons for picking a particular 08 car if you have to spend way more .

Mike Eile... unless doing mad mileage why diesel? could get a 1.4 or even 1.6 petrol bit cheaper tax much quieter & pleasant to drive (unless you like tractors!!) otherwise to avail of cheap tax would need to go diesel late 2008 onwards & pay much more than 8k for the pleasure icon7.gif

Thanks for your feedback. I am self employed and do quite a bit of travelling around the country and will be over the next few months. This car (http://bit.ly/xdJTBf) would cost over €9k to bring in (including VRT). Same car here is approx €13k. Would that qualify for the lower tax bracket? Where can I check the tax brackets? Thanks

Need new car asap , other one has died. Do quite bit of mileage as I commute every day but is it worth paying extra for a diesel. Options are:

02 Megane 1.9 dsl 75000 miles @ 2.5k
07 Ford Focus 1.6dsl 79000 miles @ 6k (NCTd)
07 Peugeot 407 dsl 1.6 60,000 miles @ 7k (NCTd)
08 Ford Focus 1.6dsl 81,000 miles @ 7.5k (NCTd and taxed till Jul, lower tax band)
OR

09 Renault Megane 1.4 PETROL, 21,000 KM - 8.5k (max budget)

Is the petrol better cos has low mileage or will the fact that diesel get more mpg and take more mileage be a better choice. Likely to keep until dead.....

(just to say I know absolutely nothing about car or seller... just for reference!)http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/Mazda6/2.0-140b/613256666367690/advert?channel=CARS & if you can afford 2009 might get tax for less (lower emmissions)??
