I find it hard to believe my LBS is this incompetent

I was busy all week with work and other important stuff so I got my back wheel to be dropped into the LBS for me to be fixed. I had a suspicion the axle was bent as the wheel wouldn't sit in the drops properly. Got the wheel dropped in and picked up the next day.

When I got home, I saw they had fitted a new skewer and what I presumed a new axle. Not bad for 20 quids worth of work. I was happy.

Refitted it to the bike and went for a cycle. Not 100 meters down the road the wheel was rubbing off the drops again. Refitted it and tightened the skewer and it didn't work. Off home again to investigate the problems.

It turns out they didn't replace the cracked axle and just had shoved a new skewer through the axle. I couldn't believe it. How on earth did they miss it.

The broken axle with the newly bought skewer, now bent where the weight was sitting on it.

Suffice to say I won't be returning for any future business. Anyone recommend a decent shop in the north kildare area? I know of Staggs but thats in Lucan and they were rather expensive the last time i was in it.

    TL;DR

LBS ****ed up, looking for a new one.....

I know he is good, but miles away from me. What about PJ wallaces in Clane? My dad says there there longer then he can remember and there pretty good.

My local Eurocycle in Newbridge is the dog's nuts!

Always friendly, always helpful, do a good job and don't mind sharing some tips on maintenance and care, and to top it all, they don't want my arm or leg in payment.

I would recommend them to anyone within a 30 km radius.

I'd be going back, handing them the skewer and asking for a refund tbh.

Totally off topic OP, but your photo looks like it was taken on my kitchen table. Is that an oak table from Ikea by any chance?

Your half right, it is oak but not from Ikea. From our local furniture shop.

Do you know what caused it to break and what model wheel or hub is it?

I've no idea what caused it to break or for how long it was broke. Its a suntour hub is all I can find on it coupled with a freewheel. Comes off an '82 Miyata 610 tourer. Wheel rim is a 36 spoke Arya 27 1x1/4 alloy wheel.

I've no intention to change to a freehub which would indeed reduce the breakages of axles but the frame spacing won't take anything more then a 6/7 speed freewheel and not a modern freehub. Also I couldn't afford the conversion.

I dropped into a new LBS last summer and asked for a set of cleats. I was told that cleats only came attached to new shoes and that they couldn't be bought on their own!!!! This is what happens when people who know nothing about bikes and cycling set up shops to take advantage of the BTW scheme - this LBS was associated with a motor dealership.

To be fair that would be a total one off robbing b***ard. I'd wager that very few shops would be like that. Example. Saturday I had to change the headset on my bike. Couldn't for the life of me get the cups out (i don't have the proper tool) so took it to CSS. Busy and all that they were but they took the bike removed the cups no bother at all and sent me on my way with a handshake 30 seconds later.

Don't let one bad experience of a creapy salesman trying to pull a fast one put you off. Slightly off topic i know.
