    Hi all,

Just a quick mention to say that this forum and info within has been very helpful so far for a newbie to HTPCs and XBMC like me. So thanks all for that.

I am having a slight speed issue with transferring media files to my HTPC at the moment that i hope someone can help with... and if this is in the wrong forum, then mods please feel free to move.

    My Setup:

HTPC in sitting room (Old Dell Optiplex with usb TP-Link wireless dongle) with attached 1TB drive for media

Standard Eircom Router in Attic (easiest place for it with good signal all round the house)

Dell Laptop with wifi built in.

The past few weekends, i have been transferring AVIs from my laptop to my HTPC over wireless. (wired is not an option for my setup at the moment)

A file of about 700mb is taking around 25 minutes to transfer (speed of about 500 KB/second!)

Is this normal? or am i missing something in my setup?

Wireless is half duplex and will be poor for file transfer. Data is sent in packets, which need to be acknowledged before more are sent. Having a weaker signal (and therefore a lower transfer rate) from the attic on both devices will slow things drastically

Speeds in the 500KB/s to maybe 1 or 2MB/s are pretty normal for wireless to wireless transfer on a basic wireless network.

If the connection was wireless only for one leg of the transfer then you could expect roughly double the throughput.

To get faster speeds you need good equipment and careful planning. The planning bit is actually more important - you can't just go and buy the most expensive router, you need thorough knowledge of wireless networking, you need to know what spec all your devices are etc. There's so many factors I couldn't even begin to cover them.

The speeds you are getting are enough to watch the movie by streaming it from your laptop to the HTPC. But for an actual file transfer it would be miles quicker to just copy it using a USB drive.

Thanks for the info, ah fair enough so... just thought it was just my router acting up!

I will slog on with transferring the odd file or two every now and then and i will plug laptop directly into 1TB hard drive if i have to transfer a load of files in the future.

    Thanks again.
