hi guys I bought a 2001 golf gti about a week ago and its been running absolutely perfect and still is, but when I went to town last night the engine check light came on I also notice the clifford alarm immobilizer light stayed on through out the trip, I went out to the car this morning and fired it up and its still ticking over perfect, ive ordered a code reader to check what it is but that wont arrive for another 3 week or so, im just wondering should it be ok to drive round until then ? the guy I bought it from was a Russian mechanic he told me he had just replaced the turbo the head gasket done the timing full service and a new thermostat he also claimed he just had it on the diagnostics and it all came up clear I brought my mate with me to look at the car hes a panel beater but knows a good bit about cars and he reccons that he could tell most the work had been carried out he also said it would be fine to drive with that light on as nothing major has gone he said it could be a coolant sensor but I just want a few different opinions cheers guys

Risky to drive not knowing the fault but if you must drive it take it very sensible with low revs and check all fluids are correctly topped up before each journey until you know the fault.

Strang that the Clifford light stayed on too though.

Try have the code read somewhere, you could end up stuck somewhere if there's an immobiliser issue

cheers guys the clifford alarm is awful annoying you have to unlock the car get in put the key in ignition wait for the doors to lock then it will fire up, but last night I just put in the key whilst my mate had the door open I waited a few seconds and fired it up anyway with out hearing the door locks and thats when the immobilizer light stayed on got into town and knocked off the engine and when I started up again both the engine check and immobilizer lights were on

Ok well that's not how a Clifford should work, there's something going on there, I can reccommend a chap in Dublin that's a Clifford specialist. Clifford alarms are the dogs danglies but if they go wrong they will leave you stuck

I had an after market alarm on a mk4 golf one time and it was nothing but hardship,if i was you i'd disable the Clifford alarm or have it taken out altogether - the factory immobiliser and dead locks should be enough to deter blagards.

cheers tossy I had it into my mechanic today the codes came up as an egr valve and boost sensor he cleared them and said if they come on again go back again and he will sort it but hes fairly certain there is nothing wrong as there would be blue smoke and its running fine as for the alarm he told me there should be a box located in the dash I can turn it off with so happy days cheers for all the help guys
