Commuting from Maynooth to IFSC

I was just wondering how practical is it to commute by bike from Maynooth. I'm working near the IFSC.

Is the Royal Canal a practical option, or is it lined with winos and swans that angrily flap their wings at cyclists?

The longest I've ever cycled is about 80km, and used to commute 5km from work, so I think I'd get fit enough to overcome the whole distance issue. Is it a nice cycle?

It's a handy enough commute if you're comfortable in traffic and have showering facilities on arrival. Anytime I head out that way has been via N4 & Leixlip. Bus lane most of the way so it's handy enough.

    hi op,

i do this route about 2/3 times a week. its a nice route especially round liffey valley. takes about 45 minutes to heuston. stick to the n4 but be careful of the sliproads and wear reflective gear

Probaly the best option would be the canal to Dorset Street, except you would need an extra hour and a good level of fitness and nerves along the deep cutting at Coolmine. Winter or summer never encountered any problem apart from that mad swan at broombridge when she has young around. My favourite route would depart Maynooth left at Charter House back roar via Carton ,Confey, Westmanstown Preonix Park.Try main road and this one probaly not mucc difference in time. Enjoy.

I did this commute for two winters....

Maynooth - Old Leixlip Road - Kellystown Lane - Confey - Westmanstown - Luttrelstown - Castleknock College - White's Gate Phoenix Park - Parkgate St. - Quays - IFSC.

The canal towpath is too slow.

the canal is not viable for a road bike

hi happygoose we probaly met i did the trip for years up to october'10. used to vary it between back road and n4 clonee leixlip. during winter the canal trip on my hybrid was great. it was as much an adventure every time and what a senic route. however again for anyone attempting for first time take great care from westmanstown bridge to castleknock.
