Dun Laoghaire Harbour Police

I am aware that Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company have their own small legislated police force haven't seen them in several years ago. Can anyone tell me what kind of state they are in today?

I see from their websitethat their establishment is less then 10 personnel while they have a "Super" of their own and a few Police Officers. Has any Mules or members of public dealt with them much? Do they be in court often or make many arrests? I'm aware they have powers to issue fixed penalty notices for breach of harbour Byelaws, does this happen much? Do they still have their small police office?

I would love to know what kind of equipment and uniform they have? When I saw them last they had Hiatts Rigid Handcuffs the same as the Airport Police while they also carried Asp Batons I think.

A quick google search shows the have at least two smartly marked Police vans. Are these just for patrols & clamping? Are they often be seen patrolling the harbour estate out there?

Just taught might be an interesting topic to discuss.. :D

These small Police Services are always interesting with great histories and stories but they have been reducing in number over the years.

Seem to recall something in 2010 or 2011 about the numbers in Dun Laoghaire reducing or being done away with completely. Not sure what exactly happened.

    Some quick Google searches

DLHP established in 1817 or 1836 (depends on which site you read)
2nd oldest police force in the country (who is the oldest?)
Previosuly the Kingstown Harbour Police until 1924

I'm sure there is plenty of info out there.

    Small aside for those interested

Port of Larne employs 7 police officers since 1847
Belfast Harbour Police carry side arms. They also policed the city airport until 2009 and continue to police 1 mile outside of the harbour boundary. 35 officers in total and have same powers as all other police officers.

Yea they use to have a Sergeant rank as well but I believe that's been done away with. Their numbers sank from 15 to 8 with retirements and the like.

I believe Dublin Port only has 4 Harbour Police officers and the rest are made up of private security now according wikipedia and a friend mentioning it. Maybe their an older force then the Dun Laoghaire force.

I seen a Dublin Port Harbour police officer wearing a hi viz jacket that is identical to the standard Garda one with navy square on the back and words "HARBOUR POLICE" on a reflective patch. Is this the the same for Dun Laoghaire's jackets? Any idea on other equipment?

I suppose the Airport Police Service in the state airports are second largest police force in country now next to the Gardai. Shame to see the smaller forces being reduced..

At the end of the day, lets all remember one thing, in the Republic Of Ireland we have only one 'Police' service, known as An Garda Siochana.

To think otherwise just mind land some in a spot of bother with that same organisation.

You are correct, with their names. Other than the Military Police unless you are in the Military, they are all civilians dressed up and just sometimes, they mentally suffer from this infamous uniform sickness. You know the one that goes to the head and all that.

Both are established and/or recognized under statute/acts of the oireachtas for the Harbour Police and the Airport Police

Of course the Airport Police remains to meet requirements under here,Empowered here and also some of their police powers here.. More statute powers then any civilian I know.. The Gardai are there to keep the peace across the whole country and not a small area like other two forces.

    Apoligies if off thread Mods..
