also my hot water and heating are on two separate timers . the hot water for the taps is still working on the timer and it is the heating which is on constantly even when the that timer is switched off.

The motorised valve for the heating zone may be stuck in open position.

+1 on the motorized valve, but may also be a faulty thermostat (stuck at temp resistance below 5deg, in frost protection mode)

I have just noticed that when i turn the thermostat down to 0 the heating still stays on. The rads are piping hot. I wanted to heat the water for the shower and noticed this.
Finally.. The rads upstairs were cold while the rads downstairs were hot. We have a thermostat for upstairs and another for downstairs.

Try changing the batteries in the stat if they are present. This happened me before.

The problem seems to be with downstairs heating valve alright. Check if the lever on the valve is on the manual position if so release it to auto position. Could also be the auxillary contact switch in the valve is stuck closed, if so valve motor needs to be replaced.

Hi. how do I do that. i don't even know what i should be looking for. is this valve in the hotpress .

You should have 3 valves in hotpress. Look at the side of the valve theres a lever. With timeclocks off check that these levers are to automatic position. If not put the lever to automatic position, note these levers should be stiff to move. If the lever is loose then the motor is probably seized in open position in which the motor will have to be replaced. Make sure the timeclocks are turned off when doing these checks

Just make sure the room stats are down to lowest setting too and that you can hear them click (this should rule out faulty stat) The motorised valve can be changed by a plumber.

You can buy a replacement actuator, no need to replace the wet side of the valve if you can operate it by hand, it's fairly straight forward , just connect like for like.
