Given the current market and 14+% unemployment rate,
how does foreign experience look on a CV.
i.e. if someone has not worked in Ireland for many years but has recent experience in the US

Is that generally a plus or minus?

Thanks in advance for any helpful comments

In my opinion, its good to have and a plus on a CV for potential employers. Having experience from a foreign country could give you an edge.

If its relevant work experience to what kind of jobs you are looking for here you shouldn't have any problems looking for work. The fact you worked in the US gives you a good advantage and might get you ahead in finding work maybe. As you may have developed skills and qualities over their that employers are looking for here.

    Good luck OP

    I second this.

It also shows your determination, ambition and flexibility to move to a foreign country and successfully find a skilled job.

    Good luck.

On the topic of CV's, how far back should you go with jobs?
I had a couple of part time jobs in college, but the same job since I left college- should I just put that job down, since it's the only relevant one?

(..since I've been in college, should I have my school history on it, leaving cert results etc.. or leave them out- or just briefly name my school?)

It really depends. Do those jobs you had in college match the experience you need for the specific position you are applying to? Do they show leadership potential or something along those lines?

If so, then yes, you should include them. If they are not relevant to that position then you can probably safely leave them off.

When I was first out of college I included summer jobs and the like but after about 3 years of work after college I stopped including them as my newer work experience was much more relevant.

I am not sure about your school stuff as I did not do school in Ireland and where I grew up you only list your college and degree, not grades or test scores.

I think it really depends on the job to be honest and if the work is related to the job you're looking for, whether foreign work experience is beneficial.

I have work experience in 3 foreign countries, and when I was applying for solicitor traineeships, it really didn't give me any edge when it came to even getting interviews. That was probably because 2 out of my 3 jobs abroad were not very relevant to what I was applying for.

That's not to say of course that it wouldn't give you an edge for other jobs.
