SAP Contracting

Has anyone ever worked as a SAP contractor?

It's something I've been thinking about for a while now although I'm not highly experienced.
I've got 3.5 years support experience and 2 years development experience with 2 different companies.

I'd like to add another year or 2 of development before trying some fixed term contracts. I dont' have a mortgage or mouths to feed so I feel I can take some risk.

I also like to travel and work on different projects.

Any advice? Is there contract work out there for someone of my experience?

My main area is SD with some MM/WM.

It used to be big money back in the day, I remember one guy getting a grand a day in the early 90's

It's calmed somewhat. Check out jobserve.co.uk.

I'd recommend you get at least another 1-2 years under your belt first.

You could try Accenture/Deloitte/BearingPoint or any other IT consulting company that does SAP work. You'd be project-based and depending on the company, have a pretty good chance of doing some travelling. Plus, a 'brand name' big firm on your cv (not necessarily a consulting company) would be useful to have if you go down the contract route in future.
    Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I plan to stay in my current role until the 2nd quarter of next year and have a look around then.

Accenture are recruiting SAP Consultants at the moment, not sure in what areas/modules.

A lot will depend on the version(s) you're working on as to your value, and I reckon experience working on a major implementation (as opposed to support) would be invaluable on your CV.

And also with your skillset of SD and MM, so much work is available, that you be surprised!

Since my inital post I've completed a rollout in Europe and I'm currently half way through one in the US. Our partner is Deloitte.

I'm still thinking of giving it a go in the Summer although I'm a bit worried. I have to give a month's notice but was told that most contracting jobs need to be snapped up before that. From talking to recruiters, it seems I would have to hand in the notice and then wait a couple of weeks as most companies that employ contractors cannot wait much more than that (I know, I know, you can't believe everything you hear especially from recruiters :pac:).

If I do go for it I'll have several projects and nearly 6 years experience. I'm very willing to travel and I get on well with people.

    Thoughts, advice?
