The small lights on either side of the front and rear bumpers? All US spec cars have them as far as I know. Think it's a requirement on cars over there.

Can't think of why they'd be illegal..saw a Porsche Cayenne the other week with US plates and the same-style side markers which aren't on Euro cars.

Volvo have them on the 99-04 S40 and similar side markers through out the range for a while.
The newer ones are built into the headlamps/tail lamps.

similar story on mercs and beemers i think

Yeah, they're on my mom's V50, but I was wondering if it would be legal to have them on a mk4 golf :)

I assume as long as they follow the lighting laws outline in the RTA (ie. white lights to the front, amber to the sides and red to the rear) there'd be no issues with it

I'd imagine so, there are a few lads on VAGdrivers.net that have swapped the standard bumpers for US spec bumpers with the side marker lights.

Here's an Irish Mk4 with them fitted: http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=52375&st=280
