New car service question

Bought a new 11 reg deisel in May 2011, not due first service according to manufacturer until I hit 30K or something like that.

Bit uncomfortable with that so will get a mini service done after 12 months / 20K to keep things ticking over nicely

At a minimum, what should I get done at that stage, oil + filter enough? wouldn't expect brakes or plugs etc to be done as mostly motorway driving

    Thanks

Ideally after 10k you should change oil and oil filter and get a mechanic to give it the once over.

They've glow plugs. Pretend that's what you meant and you wanted them changed cos you're minted :D Personally, I'd have the oil done by 10k miles.

As you should all know, wouldn't expect the glow plugs to be changed at this stage :)

    :D

The service intervals I've got for the dci fluence is every 20k/2 years or if the service indicator comes one.

If your mostly on the motorway then its getting the best use for a modern diesel anyway but I would still have an oil and filter change done between main services just to keep it in as good a shape as possible.

Glow plugs in modern common rail diesels aren't needed to start the engine anyway unless the temperature is very low.

OP, how do you find the Fluence. Can you give a brief rundown on the plus and minus attributes, please? I got an email some time ago offering me a very good deal on a 1.5 diesel. But then I got the lecture about Renaults:D and have done nothing about it since.

Mmm....please don't let this turn into a for / against Renault thread,

Bit of background.....bought a 6 month old Megane classic in 2000 ( ex rental car) and drove it until 2011, never gave me a days problem, only thing I ever put into it besides regular servicing was a new battery after 8 years and the odd bulb here & there & never any nct issues

On the other hand, missus has a 05 Megane which came with some silly, well known electrical issues that cost a few bob over the years.

So was in two minds as regards going Renault again, to be honest, really didn't like the back end of the Fluence to start with but it grew on me....when I looked at the car, while not a mechanic, even I could see that Renault had addressed some of the silly issues that had plagued the Megane II so that was a plus

To be honest I'm not a petrol (diesel) head, A to B and back to A again and I'm happy, depends on what your requirements are.

On a 200km motorway round trip, it seems to be coming in about 40% cheaper fuel consumption wise approx than the 1.4L Megane
It's comfortable, cruise control, traction control, air con, good spec generally speaking,
    I think it looks good
    5yr warranty
So far so good, no probs so far, so I'm happy,
Will be driving it for at least 8 years so depreciation not so much of an issue
I qualified for scrappage so think I got a lot of car for 16K

As I say, I'm not an expert, take one for a test drive, it ticked a lot of box's for me

Be careful with the oil spec if you are having it serviced outside of the dealer network. The DCI Renaults from mid 2010 onwards have require a very specific oil which very few garages would know about let alone keep in stock. The spec is Renault spec RN0720 ACEA spec C4. Normal longlife oil is RN0710 ACEA C3.

Expect to pay roughly €85 in an independent garage for a lube service with a genuine Renault filter and the correct spec oil.

    Looks like it -
    ... 5yr warranty ...

Ah right, I think I'm right in saying you need to be uber careful to fulfill the conditions of those extra years stuck on the end of the normal warranty. I'd stick with the main dealer.

The Fluence/Megane 1.5 DCi is a very economical car but there is a facelift Megane due in March with revisions for the 1.5 DCi (even better economy and slightly more torque) and a new 1.6 DCi chain cam with 128 bhp and 104 g/km.
    http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/renault-megane-2012-revealed/260754

So I'd wait until March before doing anything. It may be that we won't get the facelifted car in March or at all if there is unsold old stock. If we do get the facelift prices may go up or the revisions might only apply to the Megane and not the Fluence etc. You probably won't get a straight answer if you ask a Reanult dealer about what's happening, they might not even know themselves..

The only other thing I would add would be, if I was given my car to drive for eight months as a loaner to help me decide whether to buy one or not, I'd be happy enough to buy one.

    Decent size boot too.

Thanks for all the info. Don't worry I'm not anti Renault at all.
