    Hi,

I thinking of putting this course down on my CAO but have a few questions about it! I'm stuck between this and Applied Languages in UL - very different I know!!

But how intense is the Law side to to course? I'm worried that I might not have an aptitude for it. Also, what exactly do you cover for Law?
And for the Business side is it broad or can you choose to narrow down what you study?
And finally, what are the exams like at Christmas and summer? Or is it more-or-less continuous assessment?

Thanks, any information would be greatly appreciated! :)

    Hiya,

I'm a law and history student so can only help with some of your qs but there is actually a NUIM Law sticky that the department answer to on the main page of the NUIM Forum here. Maybe repose this there? If I can get on a computer at some stage I'll make sure to link you.

I wouldn't exactly call law "intense". It's hard enough work but once you can get your head around cases you should be fine. Assuming the course hasn't changed (which it might have) you'll be studying Contract Law, Constitutional Law and Administrative law. They're all easy enough imo, though not always the most fascinating at times.

It'll be mostly exams though you will probably have anassigmment for each module that will go toward your final marks.

What has you worried that you don't the aptitude for law? (if you don't mine me asking!)

The course has changed, first years now study Contract law and... Torts?
As far as I'm aware it's Torts, Constitutional and Admin have been pushed back to second year.

In any case, I'm a law and arts graduate, so I can't help you with the business side of things but here is the sticky MCRBaby was talking about.

It's not particularly tough provided you go to lectures and do the reading. The more reading you do, the more you'll understand and the more you're gonna score when it comes to exams and assignments. So if you're not really into a lot of reading, this might not be the course for you. But then, when it gets to University, you should be doing a lot of reading, so don't let it put you off too much.

It's a good course, and torts is an interesting topic to cover, most people like it.

As for business, bear in mind I'm not a business student, but a friend of mine who is a BBL has this to say about it:
The Law and Business degree is not a business law degree. Only in your third year will you in fact study Company Law. However, your
three years of study in both business and law will give you a holistic overview of both fields, complementing analysis, team work and problem solving skills. In management, as in life, knowledge builds on knowledge.

If you want to know more about what law students say about studying law in Maynooth, check out the Golden Thread, specifically the Student Survival Guides (The Golden Thread is a law newsletter published by students).

    Best of luck choosing!

    Hiye!
    Thanks for all the info!
I'm not sure really what has me worried, maybe it's just that I've an idea of studying Law built up in my head to be something really tough. And I think I would be committed to do whatever's involved, like all the reading :)
