Anyone know of any places in town that stock these? I know they have a Twin in Music Maker but I'm keen to try both out before I commit that kinda moolah.

Waltons and Music Maker are the only authorized Fender dealers as far as I know, apart from Xmusic by the Red Cow Inn.

Waltons doesn't seem to have any deluxe reverbs though.

They do have a Princeton Reverb, which is dreamy though.

Think I saw a DR in Musicmaker the other day. I just moved my one on, but they're brilliant amps. You don't need a Twin, you need a Deluxe Reverb.

They have one in MusicMaker - I tested it out a couple of weeks back as I'm looking for one of these.

Only issue was there was something wrong with the fuse in the amp and one of the guys there pulled one out of another amp.

Xmusic say they are getting some in soon.

Really not keen on buying one of these on the internet for fear it gets wrecked in transit.

Just called Xmusic - they don't have any in stock until start of Feb (if any at all I suspect)...

    Just a heads up...

Myself and my mate use the HR Deluxe and the Twin. The Twin is basically double the amp. It's a beast, and really, really nice.

The Deluxe is absolutely sweet as well, and while it's not as mighty as the Twin, it holds it's own.

However, the biggest thing I'd say to you is to beware the practicality factor. The Twin is the bain of my mates life. It's a two man job to lift it any further than a few feet, and it's not even all that robust. The Deluxe is heavy too, but you can carry it easily enough yourself.

Might seem a bit overly practical, but honestly, they're both great amps... one is just a pain in the hole. :)

Try a Super Reverb too! They weigh ever so slightly more.

Having owned, at this point, at least a dozen Fender amps of all shapes and sizes, and having played probably 50-60 more my best advice is this:

    Don't buy new Fender amps.*

Go onto adverts (for example) and find a used one, preferably from the 60s-70s.

You think they'll be WAY to expensive, but they're actually not too bad.

Another thing is, there's plenty of similar sounding amps (WEM for example) that you can get pretty cheap that sound as good as any vintage amp around.

Be a bit adventurous and you'll get something BETTER than a new Fender for a lot less, or spend a LITTLE more and get a proper Fender.

    Look here, for example:

    http://www.vintageandrare.com/product/Fender-Pro-Reverb-Amp-1973-15674

That's gonna sound nicer than 99% of what Fender makes today.

*There's a FEW decent ones, but they're EXTREMELY expensive

I agree with what your saying but, in reality, this is not an option for a lot people in regards a budget or practicality.

I played a 1960 Telecaster through a 1966 Fender Vibrolux in a store in Santa Monica earlier this year - I almost wept leaving that store because I knew, no matter what I bought, I would never be able to make that sound again for two reasons:

    1. I'm not going to buy something like a 1966 Vibrolux online and have it shipped to me. There's one in Italy on that site for over 3K. That's a lot of money to pay for an amp that's 46 years old. Added to that, If I'm paying 3K for anything I want to see it in person and test it out before paying my hard earned cash.

    2. Even if I did order one online, what happens if its damaged en route? I bought an amp from a shop in Dublin a while back, sounded fine for a week or two and then was making a weird noise, rang the shop and they swapped it out with no questions asked. You just don't have the piece of mind buying on the net from a small retailer as you would with a walk in shop locally.

The vintage market in Ireland is virtually non-existent, I tell you, the shop I mentioned earlier was like heaven, literally, heaven. That said, I would definitely consider spending more if the vintage selection was better. I'd literally give a testicle for that 1966 Vibrolux, it was the most amazing amp I ever have and ever will play. The guitar wasn't bad it either but it was a slightly more expensive coming in at 15K.

This is EXACTLY what I meant.

You can get these in the UK, easy. And if you're willing to settle for a cosmetically "meh" one, you can get them, in many cases, for less than a new one.

That one I linked to was in the UK and would be easy to get here... and guess what it was a grand.

A new very bland Fender is more than that!

MilanPanic speaks the truth. Vintage Fenders are the boss. I have a 1963 Bandmaster, which I picked up for less than the price of a new Deluxe Reverb, including a cab and speakers.

I don't care about cosmetics, the Vibrolux I played looked like it had been blown up.

Out of curiosity, what amp are you playing at the moment?

I ain't saying he's wrong, I'm actually in agreement in regard the sentiment when it comes to vintage amplification.

And if you ever decide to part ways with that Bandmaster you be sure to drop me an IM as a courtesy.

I am playing a minty early 70s Carslbro TR 60

    245gi.jpg

Absolutely one of the nicest 70s amps made.

Hardwired, heavy iron, and a perfect box. Classy components, built like a tank and sounds like one of those perfect Hiwatts that Gilmour (and many others) loved.

Wouldn't trade it for any Fender or Marshall.

I am currently having two small mods made to it. After that she's perfect and will be my main amp for many years.

    Lovely...

As much as I agree with you in regards the vintage amp market, the amp I really want is going to set me back a minimum of 3K and, at the moment, a trip to Italy because the link below is the only place in Europe, as far as I can see, that has one:

    http://www.hendrixguitars.com/Am006.htm

I can't justify spending that much on amp at the moment so its going to have to be a Reissue deluxe reverb for me which, over time, I will upgrade with different speakers.

If I lived in the states I would have picked up a 1966 Vibrolux for 2 grand cheaper than the one for sale in Italy - the selection of vintage gear in the states is amazing...

I'd still wager you'd be happier with this:

    main_21939.jpg

    less than 900£:

    http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/our-catalogue/Amplifiers/Vintage/item/7729

It's not AS good as the vibrolux, but it's gonna be better than moden fender, no matter the mods IMO.

Oh and I grew up the states... bought and played Blackfaces for PUNK bands... they were just that cheap!

BTW: I HAVE seen Vibroluxs go for about 1200euro before... just have to be patient!!

Lol... I'm foaming at the mouth.

The vibrolux looks brand new and its 45 years old !!!

Still, I can't afford 3,500 for an amp. If money wasn't an object then I would buy it now. My wife would divorce me if I spent that kind of money on an amp.

I'll have to get by with a DRRI for the time being.

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭MilanPan!c

I still say, if you can find things like old WEMs (like my old DOM AP 45) you can get something very close to blackface Fender for a third of the price.

    http://www.wildguitars.com/all_instruments/wem-dominator-45ap

That's a WHOLE lot of vintage Vox/Fender tone for almost nothing...

At the moment musician's friend in the states are doing free international shipping, so you can pick up a used DRRI for 800 dollars.

And that's 800 dollars down the drain if the amp gets stopped at customs - last time I had something shipped from the states was for work and it was stopped in customs for 6 weeks along with having to pay more to have it released...

You get charged a holding fee, 23 percent VAT and 12 percent duty, which still works out around 1100 dollars which is still 350 euro cheaper than a new one from thomann, and there's a good chance you won't get caught by customs.

And customs usually only holds stuff for about 3 days for it to clear...

You will as musiciansfriend almost certainly use UPS to ship their orders. UPS act as the customs broker and always extract the full fee. I'm sure they're mentioned somewhere in the Doomsday Book.

Regardless, I'm a big believer in buying from the US - in fact, I've never bought a guitar from thomann or any other shop in Europe - but USPS is the only way to go for shipping.

Oh really? Damn, I've only ever used FedEx or USPS and never gotten hit with customs. Apparently they do it so as your shipment doesn't get held in customs and they pay the charge and then charge you upon delivery.

Still, if it works out cheaper with customs than the price of a new one it might be worth giving a try.

Do me a favour: leave the condescending manner and tone at the door, absolutely no need for it...

Of course I understand what customs are - the point I was making was that it can be misleading for someone to purchase something from the US thinking they've got an absolute bargain only to discover they haven't when they get hit for the customs duties and taxes.

I think budget played a part in that survey.

Considering a Dumble costs in the region of 30K and a champ costs 150 - I think the Champ is going to be rated higher.

Remember that nearly all of layla and other assorted love songs was recorded on fender champs - both clapton and allman played them in the studio - and the tone is exceptional.

Obviously, if money was no object then the dumble would be higher I would assume.

Think you have the wrong Champ, the one they included was the tweed 57 RI which was around a grand new. Yeah the dumble would be higher if it was a practical solution but of course it goes for mad money.

True enough - he would have been playing on the old blackface champ and the new one is very expensive for what you get.

Loved the three Dumbles I've played through. There's one with verb and trem that's one of my dream amps.

Don't really like Trainwrecks though. Well built, but ... Kind of not made to be played in a band with other people.

    Dumbles are amazing though.

Back to the original question, in the clip below we have two guys jamming on a deluxe reverb reissue and a vibrolux reissue.

IMO I think they both sound excellent especially the "Who Knows" jam at aroun the 5:20 mark.

Henry Kaiser is equally as hilarious as Dumble..

Different Keyser is right tho, they do sound radical. Can't beat a good Fender for love nor money.
