Boiler flu dripping water

    Hope some one can help

Anyway we have noticed that the boiler flu(boiler vent) is dripping water i.e. water dripping on outside . What would be the cause of this?

More importantly anything we need to worry about?

    Many thanks

If you have a modern condensing boiler then the lower temperature of the flue gases leaving the flue are more likely to condense producing a liquid, condensate, this liquid when produced should flow back to the boiler, if the flue is fitted incorrectly then the condensate flows out of the flue terminal, the condensate has the acidity of lemon juice and has no health implication but is corrosive to concrete, metals etc...

If you have a older boiler that isn't condensing then it should be designed that any liquids in the flue drip out of the flue terminal, I wouldn't expect to see any drips apart from a rainy day.

Mention it to your RGI on your next service for further advise.

As Gary says, as a condensing boiler, it is designed to produce a lot of water in it's flue gas. However, The flue (chimney) should exit the building with a fall back into the boiler. This enables the condensate to flow down flue and into boiler, it will then exit bottom of boiler and into drain.

The flue is fitted incorrectly, with the fall the wrong way.

Short term it won't be much of a problem, long term it will discolour the surface it is dripping onto as the water is slightly acidic.
