Could the Americans not organise an AirDrop of Supplies for them? Strange to think a US City is so dependent on a Russian Tanker.

They could just bring in the oil with sled dogs :D

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1925_serum_run_to_Nome
During the 1925 serum run to Nome, also known as the "Great Race of Mercy," 20 mushers and about 150 sled dogs relayed diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles (1,085 km) by dog sled across the U.S. territory of Alaska in five and a half days, a record which has never been broken, saving the small city of Nome and the surrounding communities from an incipient epidemic. Both the mushers and their dogs were portrayed as heroes in the newly popular medium of radio, and received headline coverage in newspapers across the United States. Balto, the lead sled dog on the final stretch into Nome, became the most famous canine celebrity of the era after Rin Tin Tin, and his statue is a popular tourist attraction in New York City's Central Park.

Wouldn't dropping containers of explosive fuel from a great hight be kind of dangerous??

Wasn't Nome so-called because when the cartographers were drawing up the maps, one of them wrote "Name" as a temporary placeholder, yet this became smudged and someone else thought it was actually "Nome"?

During the Second World War there was an episode where some British troops were under siege in Burma. They were able to airdrop water and fuel by putting them in inner tubes and dropping them out of cargo planes from as low an altitude as possible.

There was another case during the Spanish Civil War where they threw chickens out of aircraft. Despite being flightless the chickens would flap on the way down and land softly. Then they could eat the chickens.

Not that any of the above would be necessary, but if it was possible in the 1930s and 40s...

    http://www.chron.com/news/article/Fuel-ship-190-miles-away-from-iced-in-Alaska-city-2448295.php
The ship is scheduled to arrive later Monday or perhaps even Tuesday. If the mission is successful, it will be the first time petroleum products have been delivered by sea to a Western Alaska community in winter.

The Russian tanker came upon ice about a foot thick very early Friday near Nunivak Island, a large island in the eastern Bering Sea, the Coast Guard said. The tanker is following the Healy, the Coast Guard's only functioning icebreaker — a ship of special design with a reinforced hull made to move through ice.

"It's going basically as planned," Evans said.

Sitnasuak officials have said they settled on the Russian tanker delivery plan after determining it would be much less expensive and more practical than flying fuel into Nome. The vessel, which is certified to travel through ice 4 feet thick for long distances, normally delivers fuel to communities in the Russian Far East.

So the US has ONE icebreaker.
The tanker can handle 4" of ice and it's only go to go through 1".
If they have never had a delivery of fuel then why doesn't Nome have bigger storage tanks ?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/14/us/fuel-tanker-renda-and-icebreaker-healy-are-sighted-off-nome.html?hp

Ship has arrived , they will use a mile of pipes to unload it.

(Gasoline and diesel cost nearly $6 per gallon in the remote city. The prices are even higher in some more rural areas, some of which also have had fuel shortages.)
1 U.S. dollar per US gallon = 0.208551395 Euros per litre

so they are paying nearly €1.25 a litre
