Apple have been having a problem with that sort of thing with some phones. It is a design flaw, manufacturing fault. Take it back to Apple or whoever sold it and get them to sort it out or replace it.

Put the sim into a different phone where you can turn off the pinlock. Then put back into the iPhone.

    Hey,

I put it in a friends iphone and it said the exact same but my friends iphone is locked to 3. Would the sim still work if it was locked to another network?
Im trying to figure out if its a problem with the sim or if maybe the phone sold to me isnt locked to the network i was told it was...

Just because you bought it from adverts it may still be under warranty. Check the serial number here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Apple don't require a receipt if it's under warranty you can call them up and they will fix it.

Put your sim in another phone and remove your pin code to activate.
If that still dont work It sounds like it might be locked to another network.
Did you see the phone working on a network, was it bought sim free or locked to a network?
    Look in Settings-General-Carrier
