    Guys

As per my last thread, I'm looking to change my caddy for a family car, and we've settled on the idea of a Mondeo, circa 01 to 03.
We won't be doing massive mileage, just zipping about, maybe 10 miles a day, with the occasional trip out of about 60 ish miles.

Considering costs of fuel, tax, etc... would I be better off looking for a 1.8 petrol or a 2.0TD?

That being said, are there common faults / issues that I should keep an eye out for with these cars?

    Thanks

Keep it simple, 1.8 petrol, Zetec, not LX.

Buy a 2.0TDDI that has had the dual mass flywheel changed. Trouble free motoring. Too many issues with the TDCI and 1.8 petrol engines.

No I disagree. Those 1.8 engines are starting to give a lot of trouble in 01-03 Mondeos. The TDDI is bulletproof.

I have a 2.0tddi (which is actually up for sale) and my friend used to have to 1.8 zetec, the difference in running costs is unreal, €20 would do me 2 weeks easily, sometimes more and my mate was spending €20 every week, he didnt keep it very long, and we were doing very similar mileage. The only problem with the diesels is the flywheel, if youre buying one then make sure it had the flywheel changed from a dual mass to a solid type.

And as george Dalton said, they're bulletproof!!

The TDDI are a great car, it was my last car before travelling abroad.

Try to look for a decent spec, some of the mondeos can be either kitted out well or bare bones, mine was an import and it had decent features for a 2002 car, Air-Con, 4 electric windows, Alloys(although mine were whipped off before I bought the car I'd Say), excellent front and back window heaters-awesome for winter especially, electric mirrors, fogs, electric adjustable drivers seat, lumbar support

also since you had a caddy, get the 5dr in case you need it, they look better (IMO) as well as being able to carry a decent load, my brother was always nicking it for odd jobs

They just dont work with the engine design, im no expert on it but when i bought it the clutch was on its way out so when i was getting it replaced everyone told me to do the flywheel too, luckily i did cause when the lads took it out they said it was on its way out too....

Here's the link. Nct is up next month but im gonna put her through in the next week or two.....

Unfortunately the older 1.8 were a bad engine and i would only buy one with genuine low miles. If you werent doing more than 300miles a week i would go for the petrol. They are good value but i would be looking for one from 04 on and lowish miles
