Sorry, these must be annoying at this stage!
I'm getting a laptop for just general use, surfing the net, storing music and photos.
The main thing I'm looking for is decent enough build quality and a decent quality 15-16 inch display. Budget is €600.

    So far I found these:
    Lenovo
    Acer
    Sony

I had a sony vaio before and it had a nice solid feel to it and a really sharp display. Are laptop screens standard, or is there something I should be looking for to make sure it's good? Obviously with cheaper laptops build quality reduces, but I'd rather sacrifice processor speed to get a solid feel.

Cheers, any advice or suggestions welcome!

The average screen resolution for a 15inch these days is 1366x768. If your not used to higher resolutions then that'll do you fine. If you want something above average, look for 1600x900 displays.

Anything that has a second generation i3 or higher will do you fine, usually the designation will be i3-2xxx, whereas the first gen were, i3-xxx. i5's will definitely future proof it for 5 years I'd say, but an i3 will last at least 3 as well.

4GB of ram is plenty and you can always upgrade it yourself easily and cheaply.

In terms of build quality sony certainly are quality, but so are brand like lenevo,Asus and Toshiba and almost always cheaper.

Have a look yourself on these two sites, they're usually the cheapest I find. You shouldn't have a problem finding something in your price range with the above specs, except for the 1600x900 displays on a 15'' screen, they are a little harder to find and usually more expensive.

Cheers, I'll take a look at those brands. I definitely don't need a great processor. I heard before that lenovo was decent quality.
