Windows 7 tablet

Much to my surprise I've recently started to want an iPad. However it got me thinking I'd consider a Windows alternative if there was one. However I'd want something in similar dimensions to the iPad.

Anyone know of any good Windows based tablets out there? I don't want a laptop that has a flip around screen that becomes a tablet.

I know Windows 8 is out later this year so perhaps there will be some good Windows 8 tablets out then?

    Thoughts?

Windows 8 is especially made for tablets, so you might want to wait. That being said have you looked into the android tablets? You can pick one up online for like 100 quid and they will do everything an ipad will do and more, for a fraction of the cost.

I bought one for Christmas and it's brilliant.

I did use a good few Android tablet that i got a loan off for several weeks. But tbh i would never buy one. Its fine for a very light user. But it cant replace Windows.

Its a good media and internet device. But thats where it ends. Productivity is low and i dont fancy carrying around a laptop to do work, tablet and smartphone for entertainment.

The cheapest one you will find is an Acer W500. Its not the prettiest tablet especially with its double thick bezel. But it does the job. Theres always a demo of it in HMV but its just over 500 quid for a 32GB model. I would make sure it running AMD fusion APU as Intel Atom sucks in performance.

If your looking for something a bit better you will be looking in the range of over 700 euro. Decent Samsung slate is in the range of 800 euros atleast. Id wait till W8 to actually replace your laptop or desktop with a windows 8 slate. At this point weather the iPad or Android Tablet in my opinion is pretty useless especially if you own a smartphone.

The thing i only really enjoy is some good games available on iPad and Android compared to playing on a smarphone :P

Haven't herd of Win7 for tablets at all, I thought Microsoft where waiting for Win8 to handle that market. From the looks of it you would be better off waiting as 8 will be a proper operating system able to run on a tablet rather than a very large phone.

Yeah probably will wait for Windows 8. I don't know if I could ever replace a laptop with a tablet though. What about installing the likes of Office and Visual Studio??

You would need a dock for the likes of those :) You cant really be that productive with a Table. A laptop will or a desktop will remain what they were because their more productive till they find a way to make touch screen devices more work friendly.

You can do small amount of word typing, but you will never type as fast and accurate as you would on a full size keyboard.

I wouldnt even think about visual studio :)

Im hoping my Acer Timeline will survive till Windows 8 machines come out :) Though im really tempted by all the new Ultrabooks announced at CES :)

I don't think I'd buy a tablet with less than 64GB of storage. My iPhone is 32GB and only has about 1 GB free left on it and I'm starting to have to move stuff off it and manage the space on it.

In my opinion min hdd size for a windows should be 60-80GB

I have an SSD for my desktop and run the rest of my files of a separate HDD. Ive about 15GB of space left on it with a couple of games and the usuals like office and other apps installed. Including updates for Windows. You could probably do with around 32GB but your head is always going to be annoyed cause you wont be able to install anything big.

After all NAND storage isnt cheap. Hence why they put these small HDD's in to save money so the thing would be cheaper.
