    Been hearing from a few lads that there's supposed to be a new tag or extra tag??? for farm animals..whats that about? and whats the extra tag for?:confused:

    It's the start of an eradication programme for BVD to be brought in in 2013. It's voluntary for 2012. There's an extra little button tag that you put on calf within first 7 days of birth. the inner part puts out a tissue sample which you then send away to get tested.

    If an animal tests positive, it must be culled from the herd. The department will subsidise (not full compensation) the value and disposal charge costs for the animal.

    There was an information leaflet in last weeks farmer Journal about it and they've been running regular articles about it.

    Hey muckit, is it true that the subsidy for calves to be culled will only be there for 2012 and not other years, cheers

    I'm no expert warfie35! But I assumed that from what I read the subsidy was ongoing. I think dairy farmers get disposal sudsidy only, as the calf is not their main source of income. Suckler farmer gets both.

    The number of BVD postive animals, if found, should be low in any one herd I would imagine.
