Asus shut-off feature

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for a while now but I cant seem to find any answer.

When the input to the screen from the computer is mostly black, the screen will turn off to save power. This is a big problem for me as I do a lot of command line work so when I have a bit of white text on a black background the screen shuts off and I cant see the text.
This is clearly a function witht he screen to save power and prolong life, but I need to turn it off and can't seem to find the necessary menu switch to do so.

If anyone could tell me how to turn this feature off, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I assume you are in windows 7?
I doubt it is an Asus thing, probably a windows 7 power saving feature.

Outside of that I suspect that if it is an asus feature you should be able to modify it in the BIOS.

    Thanks for the speedy reply!

I believe it to be an Asus feature because it happens outside of Windows, for example when there is white text scrolling before a Linux boot, or even just after the during the bios start up. Also I didnt have this problem with my last monitor.

Are you using a PC or Laptop - what model?
Have you looked in the BIOS?

It's a pc, my custom made one. Specs are:

    8GB corsair vengeance 1600mhz
    intel 2500k
    gigabyte ga-z68x-ud3h-b3 motherboard
    sapphire 6870 graphics

Had a look in the bios just there, nothing at all regarding the screen.

What type of monitor is it?
    EDIT:
There may be a powersaving or setting on the monitor itself which is causing this.....

My apologies, i never even specified that!
Its an asus ve248h, typical 1920x1080 24 inch screen, nothing special about it

    Would any of this apply?

Outside of that I would suggest there is a setting on the monitor itself (manual available on last link)

Unfortunately not, its not a case with the screen "dimming", its that the screen is completely blanking out until it gets some input with colour or a specific amount of white.

    *update* I got it.

For anyone reading this with the same problem, go into the monitors menu, select a "splendid" setting, after you click on it, it will say "reset?" click yes and the shut-off should be disabled.

Thanks for your help by the way!

Have you tried tweaking Standby options in the BIOs? Could be a feature of that

Strangely, there isnt a an option for tweaking standby options in the bios, but it doesnt matter as I addressed the issue. Thanks anyway!

Good to hear that, I'm sure the BIOs has standby options somewhere, S3, S2 etc.

Oh yeah, but correct me if Im wrong, are they not for the CPU power states etc? Do they have an effect on the display at all?

I mis-read, I thought you meant the picture turned off, I see what you mean now, strange feature for a monitor to have all the same! Yeah standby won't do anything with the display, as far as its concerned the signal stops. I don't think VGA/DVI can control these things but am open to correction on that! :o

Im not even sure what caused it to happen, changing the colour tones shouldnt really turn features like that on or off, but hey, at least I can actually read the verbose error messages again! :D

Sounded like dynamic contrast was turning down the screen brightness to make the blacks appear darker.

Hmm, what brand monitor is it? I had a Syncmaster known for having dodgy caps and if the colors are too bright it took a few on off cycles to turn on, possibly a similar issue? Could have also been an OSD bug you managed to fix!

Its an Asus ve248h. The difference between it and my old generic 19 inch dell is crazy! I know the colours are off, I havent really gone messing with calibration yet, but it doesnt matter much to me, I dont really do much work that requires accurate colours.

That would actually make sense, I had a shot through the osd and tweaked a few things, so I might have messed something up!
