best diagnostic reader

i am looking at getting a simple diagnostic reader just one to give say the codes from the engine management light being on etc, just from reding up they seem simple enough to use and the obd11 is the one to go for for cars from 01 i think, so do many of you have one or would recommend one or they any good?

it is easy and straight forward to use for a diyer? just looking at buying one as its €40 a go to plug it up may as well invest in one myself

Just plug it in read the codes, loads more info online for each code as well

clear the current codes as well to see if it pops up again or if it was a one off.

Great bit of kit and foolproof :rolleyes:

Yes they clear them and you can see if they reactivate them after a few miles.

While the codes are generic manufactures interpretations can vary for some of the more obscure ones.

Forgot to also ask ... these readers, can they reset service clocks or am i looking for something else ?

Not for €40, more advanced ones can, even mileage.... :eek:

Does anyone know if these readers are available for agri machines (ie tractors) ?
Had a look on amazon but cant find any ?

Does not matter what purpose the vehicle has as long as it has a OBD II port it will use the same protocol.

If you have an android phone check out an app called Torque. I picked up a bluetooth obd adapter for the car and now my galaxy s2 is hooked up to the cars ecu.Its like a black box for the car and gives you loads of realtime data. You can also clear engine faults with it. You can put in the current cost of petrol and this tells you as your driving how much the journey is costing. You can also upload your trips to google maps. It does too many things to list them all.

Does the free version of torque do the job as i have an obd reader coming from ebay.

Got the bluetooth dongle for about €15 on ebay and the app was €3.

Ya the site seems to be down. There are cheap elm adapters on ebay for around €20.

The plx one has a power switch and a bit of cable.

Once you have one of these, get the Torque app on android app store. Haven't tried the free version, but paid version is €3.50 which is very good because i think its worth a lot more.
