Folks, my vw golf, 1.4 petrol failed on emissions. Its on the high idle -
the Co is 0.68 vol % and the HC is 326 rpm. Anybody know how to fix this or do I have to take it back to mechanic? and is it a big problem? Thanks!

Might be as simple as needing new spark plugs. Any fault codes in the ECU?

High CO and HC imply incomplete combustion. It could be bad plugs, could be further up in the ignition system. There are any number of sensors that could cause misfuelling.

You'd probably do well to get this to a mechanic who has diagnostics and take it from there.

Those engines are prone to burning oil as the mileage rises.

You need to have the functions of the various components properly diagnosed to see where the problem is.
