    Hi,

I dont know a lot about cars - came here to vent and mope about giving away something too cheap. any opinions welcome.

I just bought a new car, and also sold a 2000 Golf 1.4 with 100,000 miles on it. the golf had a few problems- door wont open from inside, driver has to open from outside, central locking frequently goes crazy- mechanic already couldn't fix it, clutch is squeeky, engine good apart from that. I gave it to a guy I work with for €400. NCT was due in March.

A friend has since told me the golf was worth a grand and just had a look and asking prices on Donedeal are higher again. The car seemed worn- it would have cost a bit to fix those bits and pieces up (central locking can be complicated apparently, lock alone would cost 100-300, then go for NCT, hope nothing else was wrong with it etc.). It didn't seem like a 12 year old car with problems should cost so much.

    What do you reckon?

    -S.

Id say you could of got more for the golf. Around €1,000ish

Golfs with worse problems go for stupid money. Clutch may have been something simply like a bit of WD40. Could have got a good bit more for the Golf in my opinion.

RJ You sound like my wife! You're both dead right. The Qashqai is lovely btw.

I just hate making mistakes/ giving something away for nothing. Lesson learned for next time anyway...

The silver lining of selling it to your buddy for €400 is that if the gearbox fell out of it tomorrow he won't be annoying you about it :)

I took the car off my friend this morning. He knew what it was really worth so he should have advised me at the time really. Put an ad on done deal. Within 5 minutes I had 3 calls.

Just sold the car for a grand.

Thanks for the info lads - I put it to good use and am a lot happier now.

A deal is a deal IMO but also, a friend shouldn't pull a fast one on a friend. Not worth falling out over anyway.

This rates as one of the daftest outcomes I've ever since on Boards.ie. I would say 'colleague' would be a better word than friend. Or work friend. A deal is a deal. If you had been stuck with your car for three months because you'd advertised it for 1600, let's say (because you were overvaluing it) you would have been delighted for your friend to take it eventually. It's called buyer's remorse / seller's remorse and as RoverJames pointed out, you're probably better to look forward than look back. Then again, you are now 600 better off. But your 'friend' is now 600 worse off, despite helping you liquidate your car i.e. taking a risk.

I hope you'll excuse me and possibly few others for being taken aback. I couldn't imagine doing that to a 'friend' and deciding that he knew it was worth that much. If that's true, then his knowledge attracts a premium, that's how true markets work. It would seem that you have upped your knowledge. Good. You're learning how wasteful cars are. Next lesson is the waste of a new car !!! :-D Seriously, enjoy it though. Happy New year.

That's a bit of a sh1t one for your ''friend''. As the others have said a deal is a deal, wouldn't like it to happen to yourself would you?But that's life so enjoy your new wheels anyway!

I bought a printer from a guy a few days ago, as an add-on to another sale. Neither of us knew what current condition it was in but it had been working well. I offered a tenner as he had been going to send it for recycling. I now check eBay and a working one, which it is, is going for 30. Do I expect to send on €20 or to get a knock on my door saying 'hey, that's worth 30 and you probably knew also' ??

No, I don't. Both parties take risks in 2nd-hand goods.

Some mate, if a deal is done it's done, no going back. You should have looked around at similar cars prior to selling it if you didn't have a clue. Mate or no mate if I bought a car off someone and they wanted it back it wouldn't be as simple as here you go, here's your car sorry I payed so little. :D

    I sold a 1999 Bora 1.4 basic model with 180,000 miles a few weeks ago for €220.

It was going OK engine was fine but the central locking stopped working and the only lock that would open the door was the boot and the boot lock motor was also broken and the drivers side wing mirror adjuster was also broken, used a sponge behind the mirror to keep the mirror in the correct place, there was also rust on the bonnet from stone chips and some rust around the windows both front and back.

It was due a service tax, NCT is due in a few months too.

Couldn't be dealing with tyre kickers. A boyfriend of one of my wife's colleague's who's unemployed needed a car to be able to go see his daughter in another town.

I know he got it for a steal but don't regret it one bit.

I wont go into details but this guy owed me a favour. He was advising me on buying the other car - used to be a dealer - so he shouldn't have taken advantage. 400EUR is not a reasonable price for this car - even at a 1000 it was a steal with 20 calls in 2 hours and people queuing to buy it.

If I had been left to my own devices I would have found out the market value and secured it - same as I did when I bought the new car.

You're right - a 'friend' wouldn't have done this so I applied the appropriate response.

Anyway enough negativity - thanks all for the advice and feedback - its all good food for thought.

Lol, op's story just takes the biscuit. I reckon your friend has a bigger conscious than you if he gave it back.....a 'Heads I win, tails you lose' story if ever I heard of one.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
