Folks, my vw golf, 1.4 petrol failed on emissions. Its on the high idle -
the Co is 0.68 vol % and the HC is 326 rpm. Anybody know how to fix this or do I have to take it back to mechanic? and is it a big problem? Thanks!

You can get something (maybe a mix that goes in with your petrol) that redues emmission for a short period of time. Try googling it maybe.

    Nocturnal emissions?

I had a similar problem not so long ago. Well, the exhaust was hanging off and I had put diesel in instead of petrol.

I just left a fifty euro note in the ashtray and that seemed to fix it.

Big problem for you op, not for us in AH's.

No,that's legal advice. You're free to diagnose away.
We're all ears here about how you fix those emissions things.

    Common problem.
Change the Lambda sensor (one plug under the bonnet to undo, and a 19mm ring spanner to unscrew it out of the catalytic converter).
    Then change the air filter.
Take it for a good run and get it nice and hot before the NCT.
This will bring the emissions down.
The hotter the cat gets the better it will work.
With a new Lambda sensor and air filter, the air will be cleaner in and out of the cat (so lower emissions).

If it still fails after doing the above, then you will have no choice but to fit a new cat.

For starters I'd change the Lambda sensor (one plug under the bonnet to undo, and a 19mm ring spanner to unscrew it out of the catalytic converter). Then change the air filter. Better off taking the car for a good run and get it nice and hot before the NCT. This will bring the emissions down.

    Simples.

You do realize that if he doesn't put the Lambda sensor back in to one millionth of a meter there is a strong chance it could explode the engine up?

It depends on probably 3 things .first if the engine was cold when it was tested it would have high emissions ,the hotter the oil the better .If that was'nt the case its either the catalytic converter or the exhaust sensor which is either on or very near the cat .back to the garage at any rate .try the sensor first [cheapest option first ].

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

Dodgy O2 sensor (common VW problem) or else you've an exhaust leak. Either way take it to the motors forum. Any responses on AH will result in self destruction of your VW Golf - just for fun.

And if it does explode don't forget its pics or GTFO :D
