Will the Internet invent more words than Shakespeare?

Shakespeare is credited with inventing (or popularising) over 2000 new words for the English language.

Off the top of my head I can think of "Googled" (to use a search engine), "tweet/tweeting" in reference to Social Networking (as opposed to a bird making noise).

How long do you think before it has created 1000s of new terms and outdoes the Bard?

Excluding acronyms and the like there's still already loads of new words created via the internet.

Yep, it only popularises already created words (by other individuals).

Dunno if there will be many new words created, but new meanings to old words is probably more likely. And Acronyms galore, people dropping them into sentences.

We already have text chat (HATE IT, never send a text with text chat) thanks to mobile phones!

    Off topic but.......

As for the topic. Well it's possible. Shakespere has been dead for hundreds of years now. The internet will be around for a long long time, assuming of course the world dosen't end. BUt if the internet continues to bring about new words, then it could eventually outdo Will Shakesphere. BUt who knows.

I wonder how much of what is posted on Boards today for instance will be accessible in any format in say 100 years. Old stuff like manuscripts in pencil or fountain pen ink may well outlive what I am typing now.

As Bill Gates said "Ther internet is just a fad".

The internet just publishes new words, it creates a few technical terms, so not a chance.

Created for the purpose of the internet though. Like trolled, pwned, and many others that I just can't remember right now! :) Not to mention words created for completely new concepts!

I don't know many kids, but the one that I know - my OH's nephew - speaks largely in internet language. I understand him somewhat 'cause I spend time on boards and whatnot, and, so, am hip with the cool kids' lingo. :p But there's no doubt about it - our language is evolving at a rapid pace so as to keep in tune with the continuous advancements in technology. Sure, it has to. Otherwise, we'd still be calling the "internet" the "connected tv that shows porn 24/7".

Again, someBODY came up with those terms, a living, thinking, human.
    Not an non-living computer network.
The people on the internet are only forwarding/popularising words.
    The internet is their tool.
