Motherboards smells of smoke

I got a laptop of a friend the other day. I've disassembled it and while i did this i got a smell of smoke of the motherboard. There is no life at all, no fans spinning no lights, the charger is brand new and it is the correct voltage, i have used a universal charger also. im just wondering would the motherboard have be…

im just wondering would the motherboard have be shorted? and would it be possible to fix it or is it completely dead?
