Motherboards smells of smoke

I got a laptop of a friend the other day.
I've disassembled it and while i did this i got a smell of smoke of the motherboard. There is no life at all, no fans spinning no lights, the charger is brand new and it is the correct voltage, i have used a universal charger also.
im just wondering would the motherboard have be shorted? and would it be possible to fix it or is it completely dead?
