I watch a lot of rugby, but I've never actually played the sport and really want to. I'm 20, male and consider myself pretty strong. :)

Tell us the area you live in and I'd say you'll get a few people inviting you down to have a look at their club.

I moved to Dublin back in Jan of last year and went down for a session with a club and have never been so welcomed, even more so then my old club back home and the setup was great, got on great with the lads. so just get on to the local club and u will pick up the game in no time!

How dirty is local club rugby ? Few people I spoke to about playing told me its pretty rough with a lot of cheap shots and off the ball stuff. Could be just the way it is in some parts between certain teams though.

I've never seen much other than Pro12 upwards so havent much to go by other than professional rugby which I assume would be a standard well above amateur when it comes to discipline.

    Hey all,

Don't want to hijack the thread but have a similar question to the op. I'm moving to Galway City in a few weeks and wondering if anyone could recommend a club for a beginner? All I can find is Corinthians, Galwegians and OLBC and they seem to be of a high standard and was hoping for a club that would accomodate relative beginners? I'm moving from the north so not too sure of the set up of junior rugby.

I've played a good bit of rugby league and a small bit of union so was looking for a club that welcomes new players, I'm kind of looking for a way to meet new people etc when I move.

    I'm 28 btw if that's important!

    Thanks.

Galwegians have 3 adult teams as do corinthians, i can imagine either clubs 3rds team will be able to accomodate you

    Thanks for that,

Do you think it's too far into the season to join up - say end of January? Don't want to be getting in the way of stuff. Will give them both a buzz on Monday either way and see what the craic is.

Hi Nuser, I'm from Galway originally so I would know about about the rugby set-up there. Depending on where you will be living there are more clubs than the one's u have mentioned. if u check out the connacht rugby domestic page: http://domestic.connachtrugby.ie/ there are a good few clubs in the junior leagues including gort, creggs, loughrea, monivea and buccaneers so depending on where u living there are a good few rugby clubs, I played underage for Corinthians and really them along with Galwegians and OLBC are the best if ur living in the city center. really good setups and sound lads aswell. Id say have a look at the website and see is there any teams u may fancy to play for...

    Hey Marto,

Thanks very much for that. Great help. I'll be living in the city so will check out the three you have mentioned there. I'm not familiar with the set up in the south so assumed they wouldn't have teams for new players due to seeing them in the AIL and whatnot!

Meh. The dirty stuff happens at all level of rugby. Most players don't get involved in it but there are always one or two who try a cheap shot.

Off the ball stuff which is often times due to nerves or exuberance is a bit different. Usually very little in it and actually can help calm down the game.

    I wouldn't worry about tbh.

If he's from west Clare then kilrush have an adult team and I think they need all the players they can get at the moment

Sorry for jumping into this thread but I would love to start rugby training. I have never played but have been toying with the idea of learning (or at least even just doing the training initially) since I moved to Cavan. I am working in Cavan town but live near Ballyjamesduff so the only clubs I know of are Cavan Rugby in Swellen and Virginia Rugby Club. Could I just show up and ask if I could train with them?

Im 40 but I go to the gym 4 times a week and I am fairly fit.

I was in my thirties and not that fit at all. Best thing I ever did :).

The club needed a bit of "weight" & I needed to lose some :P.

They shoved me in the second row & I pushed, rucked & tackled to my hearts content for several seasons. Even discovered an admirable turn of speed considering my size which was usefull for the (very) odd line break.

Quite a few bumps & bruises not to mention a few floaters (ribs that is) but when I broke the cocycx the Senior Partner in the household called me ashore :P:P:P.

I had an absolutely fantastic few years & then switched to coaching the kids. Love that too. The sheer joy that the under 7s bring to the field would melt the heart of the most cynical lickadoo. Seeing them progress is just great.

So eh, to cut a long story short gazzer, GO FOR IT!!! ;)

    Its not.
As others have posted you get the odd isolated incident, but its normally not in every match. I ref and id say about one game in ten id have smallish issues and at a guess one in thirty with anything more than that.
Unlike GAA, cheap shots off the ball are not really present in the game.

Thanks for replying. Sounds enjoyable (if a bit sore :) ) I will pop up to the local club one of the evenings after work and see if I can get to talk to somebody. Definately need to do something to fill up my spare time as even though I go to the gym at lunchtime most days, once I get home and have my dinner I am just vegging on the sofa for a few hours watching tv.

I only started playing when I was 20 and I'm 24 now. As long as you are fit and strong or fast(or both!) you'll have no bother fitting in. I played against Galwegians 3rds before (could've been a mix of 2nds and 3rds actually)and we beat them 55-0 or something so that might suggest that breaking into the team wouldn't be too difficult!
