Thinking of getting a diesel car

Have a query here, im thinking of changing from Pertol to Diesel.
    I currently have a 1.4 VVTi T3 Corolla.

I've moved jobs which means ill be doing more miles. I've worked it out and in a year, I'll be roughly doing an extra 3.5K miles.

Would it be worth to see about getting a diesel car?

I'd be trading in my own, which i reckon could get around €2500 on a trade in (03, NCT till 2013, 117k miles, 3 door, Air con, Sunroof, electrics etc) and i could probably get about €6k. So thats potentially €8.5k or so to buy a new vehicle (taking into account it would have to be a dealer willing to take a trde in)
Now the tax on my own is €330 a year, if i move to a diesel pre 08 it could be around €620 a year.

Basically I'm wondering, would it be sensible to make the change?

I know the price of diesel and petrol are pretty much the same now but should i get more mpg on a diesel, which would outweigh the change in tax over a year?

If so, any ideas on what cars would suit?

Any advise or help greatly appreciated.

How many miles are you doing a year as it is?

im not sure exactly, i just know for work.

like exclusively travelling to work, i do about 6200 miles a year.

the change, ill be doing 9800 miles a year to work.

id say i could do about 7-9k a year outside of work

so potentially 18k miles a year

You forgot to consider the €6000 you'll be spending to buy the car. How many miles do you think you'll need to drive to offset that?
    Probably well over a million!

What kind of mileage do you do?

Your current car costs 358 to tax and does 42mpg (according to parkers)

So lets say you changed to a 320D or something, tax would be 660 and they do 49mpg (according to parkers)

So if you do 20,000 the petrol will cost €3608 and the diesel will cost €3445.

If you only do 15,000 the petrol will cost €2795 and the diesel €2749

So unless you do well over 20,000 miles its not worth changing to diesel, because your car is quite economical for a petrol.

Wouldn't bother changing OP. At that mileage keep your reliable Toyota rather than change to a diesel to get a few more mpg. You won't make a great saving on the tax either..

Get an old nct certificate to work out your mileage.
