hi have a problem. yesterday i got paid for six weeks wages that i was owed from work. The problem was even doh i am paid weekly they paid all my wages in one lump. That ment i seen 1400 euro of my money go in tax and deductons. i got less than the 1400 for myself. I contacted my pay roll and they stated as it was paid in one week i am only entitled to one weeks credits etc.

Can someone explain how that is fair or legal. It was six weeks wages and what can i do to get my wages back. I was decent enough to accept the fact i wasnt getting it before christmas and i basically owed all of that to people.

As they paid you yesterday, they seem to have used your 2012 tax credit cert meaning they could only use 1 weeks worth as we are only in the first week of the tax year. If you will be employed by the same company over the next few weeks you may get some of the overpayment back piecemeal depending on how much you earn each week.
This is one of dangers of getting paid in one tax year for work carried out in another.

You have 5 weeks unused tax credits in 2011 - This is on the basis that you received no wages for 6 weeks .

Get you P60 ASAP and apply to Tax office for balancing statement for 2011 to include all tax credits / allowances you are entitled to.

You should then receive a refund of your overpaid tax .

Multiply your 2011 weekly tax credit by 5 , and this is the least amount you should receive ( assuming you did pay correct tax in 2011 )

If your weekly wage for 2012 is more than the value of ( 5 times ) your weekly tax credit , the only piecemeal you will get is the difference between 41% and 20% ( assuming you paid tax at 41% in 2012.)

this was all discussed on Joe Duffy (radio 1) - lots of pensioners with other income are up in arms about it. basically it is correct that income from pension and income from wages are totalled to give correct tax data....but always worth checking your own situation with revenue.
