Oil Filter Quality?

For those who do their own servicing, where do you buy your oil filters and is there any way of knowing a decent one from one that should be avoided?
Can I trust Motor factors or should you go to main dealers?
    Thanks

I've only ever used filters from main dealers, they are usually around the same price as a motor factors filter so a no brainer for me.

the paper in the filter is supposedly of a much better quality in a genuine towards a spurious part, but surley there has to be certain specifications to be met in manufacturing?

I would ask the motor factors what they have, if they have several brands, suss out the makes.
From experience on Mercs I prefer to go with a brand like Mann, Hengst, or Knecht, and I now avoid Fram and Tecnocar.

I bought Fram and Tecnocar filters, and immediately I noticed the weight of them was much less, also when i compared them to the better filters, they seem to skimp on things like internal pressure valves, and proper metal thickness.

Totally agree there you just have to no your brands.as they will say in the motor factors do u want the cheapiesy and they give u some mad name filter for a euro less and the filter is the worst thing ever for the sake of a euro

People need to remember that no vehicle manufacturers make their own filters/service parts. They have them made to their specifications by other companies, these companies, by European law are allowed to make the exact same products under their own name for the after market.

Most of the European made cars use the likes of mann filters or mahle/knecht so if you stick to premium brand after market filters like these then you'll never have any issues as these will be literally identical to the one originally supplied in your car.

.... plenty of main dealers buy filters in the local motor factors for cars they are servicing :)

I like to have the invoice from a main dealer for service items, then mark date and mileage on it as a record. Have done that with every car I've owned.

It's nice to have a pile of receipts/history to show a potential buyer, imo it helps the sale.

Thanks everyone for the advice, great to get expert opinion. A filter may seem like a small item to some but its got to be right. I haven't bought one in over a decade so just wanted to be sure.

True but the factors I would go to are old school and wouldn't have an itemized receipt, just price on it.

If you're unsure then its safest to go genuine

Same as mine..For those interested: Artane Motorfactors (beside goblet) sell genuine Toyota for more or less the same as spurious ones.

Not the case I'm afraid, forgeries, the small oil is about 8eu at the dealers and this is an ok price.
Ask your dealer to crossref the no and all will be revealed
At least with regular filter brands you have and idea of what you will get

...a bit suspicious and unjust tbh a lot of taxis use this place...its the genuine article I've checked has all the hallmarks of the genuine toyota product and afaik it was around 7-8 euros.
