Timimg belt on a 00 Opel Astra

    Hi,

    I have a 1.4 petrol Opel astra and will need to get the timingbelt/waterpump changed soon.

    I was quoted €300 by a local mechanic and was wondering if that was a reasonable quote or if I was being overcharged.

    Sounds about right, I was charged the same for the t/belt including service (oil and filters, general inspection) by a reputatble indy this time last year.
    The belt job is quite straightforward, I believe.

    €300 is spot on for that engine IMO.

    Thanks lads,

    I might go ahead with it then. Its a case at the moment of driving it until it dies and just buying a new car as thats what I am thinking of doing or change the timing belt and keeping it going for as long as possible.

    That doesn't make sence unless the rest of the car is in bits, 300 for a timing belt is a lot less then a new car!

    thats why i havnt decided either. what i mean really is that i will drive it until i get around to buying the new car hopefully in the next 6 months and hope the timing belt lasts.

    Im doing 20kmiles a year now so want to change to diesel so dont really want to invest to much into a car that isnt really worth much. if i invest €300 into it now and sell it in 6 months i will do well to get €1000 but if i sell it in 6 months without doing the timing belt, I will still get €600.

    Thats my thinking anyway
