Query about Solid fuel stoves

Hi and happy new year to all,

Would like to pick your brains about solid fuel stoves. A friend of ours installed a solid fuel stove recently and swears that is was the best €3K invested as the heat is fantastic.

She is constantly saying that is it something we should look at.

    Our background:

    Location: Live in County Cork

House: 3 Bed room semi build by McInerney in early 1970's

Built type: Cavity block - meaning that it can't be pumped, effectively. There would be no certainty that the insulation would be effectively distributed

Heating: Kerosene Home heating, no back boiler and TBH I have only lit the fire twice in the past 15 years!

Heat efficiency: The house is difficult to heat and the heat is lost rapidly.

    Query:

Is it possible to install a solid fuel stove in the existing fireplace?

Is it as simple as dropping the stove into the current fireplace or is there preparation work involved - lining the flue, replacing the wood surround of the fireplace etc etc.?

Do the benefits outweigh the cost?

Is it messy when in use like an open fireplace?

Why not spend a little now to find out why your house is difficult to heat and retain its heat before expending on a new stove. PM sent

Yep it may be better at the moment to consider putting the money towards (EWI) external wall insulation.
This at least would conserve the heat in the house. There isnt much point in investing in a stove for the heat inside to be lost overnight.

Then consider buying a stove.:) It would be a pretty simple job to install an insert stove but I myself would prioritise the wall insulation and loft insulation. The loft should have at least 300mm thickness of insulation.

See this section for all things insulation etc. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1162
