    Hi all

Currently have an '88 MF390 2wd, going well but could do with 4wd.

Have spotted a clean 4255 with low hours going at reasonable money.

Can anyone tell me what the 4255s are like on diesel in comparison to the 390 2wd?
Is there anything I should be knowledgeable/ wary about if I were to view this tractor?
    Thanks in advance.

From what I'm told the 4255 is the replacement for the 390t. About 95hp so the fuel consumption may be a little more. I think the 4245 is closer on power. Tractordata should give you all the info. I had considered it,:) but I believe the 6255 is available from 99_03 and has few more creature comforts. It's also supposed to be more reliable from what I've read.
    Hope that helps.

I wouldn't see any issue in coming up a few horsepower if we were upgrading provided it wouldn't be awfully heavy on diesel.
The only reliability issues I've heard or read of are with the 24/24 and 12/12 powershuttle boxes, we would be strictly going for the 12/12 manual shuttle, virtually identical to the system used in the last of the 390s.
As far as the 6255 goes, I have never seen one in the flesh and there are none on donedeal. I'd feel worried as far as finding parts is concerned.

The main reason I'm wondering about diesel consumption is because the tractor will have to do a 15 mile round trip on the road, with a bale splitter, once or twice a week.
I'm very impressed with the fuel economy on the 390.
Wouldn't want to change into a tractor that's a guzzler on diesel. Can't find stats on diesel consumption anywhere!

Try British farming forum. They seem to be well informed over there. I do remembering them saying something about the shuttle. I take it that the older 12/12 is the better job.
Try Nelson Alexander up north. I've herd a lot of good things about him. No much movement on haggling though. I believe the price is the price.

Not sure on newer models but I thought the 390t was turbo. Which would drink a little more than a 390. Not too sure about newer models.
