Hey just wondering what the rules are about taking the theory test, as in do you need to have taken lessons before hand and so on. I heard you do have to have 12 lessons under your belt before you can take it. If thats the case where is the cheapest plus im 19 male and wondering how much insurance would be?:)

The theory test is a knowledge test taken on computer with multiple choice questions. You must do this before doing any driving whatsoever as you cant get a learner permit until its passed and you cannot drive without a learner permit.

Also, you can't take your practical test until 6 months after you have your learner permit.

    Moved to Learning to Drive.

OP, have a read of THIS it pretty much covers everything in great detail, from start to finish.

Insurance will be incredibly expensive. Unfortunate but true. You'd be talking 2000+ per year. And you'd be doing well at that price.

Thanks alan, As stupid as this question may sound whats the difference between theory test and and learning permit, I mean do the same qualification apply and i do not need to have taken a driving lesson before hand.

Plus if i was to get second insurance on a car after my mother would it be considerably cheaper?

With respect, you don't have a clue! Take a look at the RSA site, its actually pretty good and explains it.

    In a nutshell:

Theory Test > Learner Permit > Lessons > Driver Test > Licence

However you have to wait 6 months between the Theory Test / Learner Permit until you can sit the Driver test i.e. If you get your permit in January, you cannot sit the test until June at the earliest. You also must a certain amount of lessons / hours.

And yes, its considerably cheaper to be a "named driver" on your mothers insurance.

Not trying to clip your wings, but I'm a tad older than yourself, take it from me, DO NOT buy your own car unless you have a decent steady income. The insurance and tax are a killer if your the named driver (i.e. The car is yours and you are the main driver on the insurance) plus maintenance. Then petrol. Most lads I talk to have no idea how much it is to fill a car. We're talking €60 a week maybe. Thats €3000 a year. Now pay your insurance and tax, and actually buy the car ;)

As bad as it sounds, be a named driver with your parents, get experience and wait until your at least into your early twenty's before you think about buying / maintaining a car.

No need to be such an <SNIP> pal, friendly threads for people who don't have a clue thats the point of forums,

188 euro a week is sufficient i think pal ,

Absolutely no need for that at all. This forum is here to let people ask questions, getting smart alec responses isn't helping anyone.

If you have a problem with a post, report it and let us mods deal with it.

Now lets leave this here. Do not reply to this post, either of you.

Sorry if that sounded like a dressing down. Not intentional. My opening line "With respect, you don't have a clue!" should have finished "because the RSA don't make it easy to understand" So my apologizes for that.

Can I ask what the €188 is about?
