I'm Trying to fill out my motor tax renewal. I owe 2 months arrears, and am puzzeled as to which rate applies. The arrears are due for November to December 2011. Is this charged at the old rates (seeing as this period fell in the old tax band rates) or are all arrears now calculated at the new higher rate since the start of Jan??

    New rates it would appear

    http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/MotorTaxRates/

Linky there for rates as of 2012. You're paying in 2012 so I'd say your screwed for the arrears.

    edit: snippet from rates doc
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    1. When calculating quarterly or half-yearly rates cent should always be disregarded.
    2. Arrears in excess of one month should be calculated by multiplying the arrears rate for one month by the number of months involved and ignoring the cent in the result.

Doesn't say anything about knocking a few quid off ;)
