Goals for 2012

What are yee goals for the new year, be it open water, learning to swim, getting a certain time?

For me, I need to go back a year first.
    Last year I competed in several OW swims - 1No. 2.5km, 1No. 3.8km, 2No. 5km, 1No. 6km, 1No. 6.3km and 1No. 7.5km. All were in wetsuits except for the 6.3km around Muckross lake in Killarney, which I swam in a skin suit.

This year I plan in doing the same swims but all in togs. Going to be a totally different experience and something I can't wait for. I am lucky to know many very experienced OW swimmers in Munster and I will be in safe hands during this transition period.

A second target is to complete in the national 5km OW race.

Did a sprint swim as part of a relay team in a triathlon. 750m in 23 mins :o. Only learned to swim a couple of years back tho.

Going to try and get 20-25% off that time in this years event. :)

Seeing as I am swimming on regular basis again, for the first time in 20 years, I just want to be able to do 50 lengths front crawl.
Broke my neck last year so swimming was part of my rehab and reminded me that I actually enjoy getting in the water. I am currently transitioning from 50 length breast stroke to the front crawl, as I think that my neck is strong enough to take it.

It is bloody hard though :D

First part of my plan will hopefully take place tomorrow with a very short dip in the sea. Want to experience want 10-11°D feels like.

    Hi

I had planned to do the Eton 10k swim on Dorney Lake in May but looks like I can't travel that weekend. Any 10k swim events on these shores?

I just did the i3 5k lough derg swim last year and a 3.8k section of a triathlon but would love to try the Olympic swim marathon distance.

    Ta

    Ta

Attached you can find the Munster OW schedule from last year. As you can see there are a few swim over the 10km (10.5, 15, 16km). I understand the national 10km swims took place in Lough Dan and Lough Sheelin.

Further distance swims can be found on the ildsa website. Keep an eye out for 2012 updates.

Bottom line, you don't need to travel to compete in 10km swims. However in Ireland, I don't think many turn up for these events.

Excellent idea to start this okane.
Have not set up any 2012 aims due to being neck deep in exams. I have signed on to do a charity 5k swim at the end of April up here in Belfast and I am thinking of doing a triathlon with a difference but have yet to hash out anything definative. Ill keep you posted

The Aran Swim (Inis Iarr to Doolin) is listed as 10.5k (although i'm sure out in the open Atlantic like that you'd actually swim alot further) . . . . although maybe not exactly what you are looking for, it would be quite something to be able to drop it into conversation with marathon runners or tri-athletes that you "swam ashore from the Aran Islands"

    1. Keep working on my technique
    2. Apply 1. to get a bit faster
    3. Move out of the pool and go OW
    4. Spike to Cobh swim
    5. Keep enjoying it

    1. Get my 1500m time (25m pool) under 25 minutes

    2. Get myself under 72Kg!

    3. Learn to tumble turn - which should help achieve 1 above. I've NEVER been able to tumble, not on dry land either. As a kid I couldn't do it. I think I have a serious mental block on tumbling :(

last year my goals were to recover from shoulder injury and to complete the half ironman in Galway and take part in the 5k open water swim in Lough derg, without a setsuit, both of which I did.
This year my goal is very focused, I will be taking part in this years world masters in Italy, will be doing the 100 and 200m fly and I hope to do the 3K open water race, so my goal is to knock off at least 10 secs off my 200m fly time and to knock at least 1 sec off my 100m fly time.
I would like to break 22 mins for the 1500m and I have an opportunity to try this in our LC gala in the arena pool in March.

If it's time for an update then

    1. Once! And it nearly killed me :pac: But I want to do it consistently
    2. Currently under 73Kg. Started the year at over 78Kg so I'm getting there.
    3. Zero progress :o

Didnt want to mention anything when I posted this because I was on a roll, did an all time best week in the pool of 25km this week which consisted of 5x5km swims. Well pleased with myself, seem to be back on a fitness level

I had meant to at the start of the year, i spawned the idea last year but got so distracted with my masters that i never got around to it. im a relativly slow swimmer so a 5km swim takes anywhere from 2 hours to 2 hours 20 mins.
slow or relativly ok. Did a 2km open water swim last week down at the 40ft in sandycove with a couple friends. Was damn cold in just a swimsuit, really wished I had a wetsuit

Ah Templeogue swim was on Sunday at Seapoint at 4pm, you should of popped along, even entered it. The start was cold but once you got out a bit the temp changed a good bit, couple of cold spots here and there but in general nice water....

40ft feels always cold to me, Glenalbyn are having their sea swim this Sunday (weather permitting) at 11am I think at Sandycove...

Im living in Belfast at the moment doing my masters up here so im only down south once in a while. The 40ft is cold but damn once you warm up in it its a lovely swim, seals and all
