Cutting down VERY overgrown shrubs and trees

I have an exceptionally overgrown garden.

No exaggeration - it's jungle like! Mostly hedging with about 3 trees.

My neighbours have no problem with them all coming down - they're ugly and block light.

But I'm wondering if there's any permission I need to get from the council or some other organisation to cut down the trees?

I doubt they're protected but how do I find out for sure if the are?
